Is Fall Out 4 worth it?

Have no clue what the price is for the game and the DLC at the moment, but the 76 thread has got me interested.
I’ve never played a FO game aside from New Vegas. I enjoyed it, but the wonky gameplay has kind of kept me away.
My main question I guess is im wondering if this is a game where I have to build a shite ton. I don’t hate base building, but I definitely don’t want to do it for 100 hours.
The lore interest me as does just questing. Is the the game and DLC worth it for those alone?

I probably put 60 hours into the game. I just stopped playing all of a sudden because I made the mistake of doing too many dumb side missions with settlements. So I have no idea what happens because I just burnt myself out.
Just throw some turrets up and do the main story and some large side quests. Don't keep helping settlements. Someone will obviously correct me but if I could do it over again that is what I would have done.
ETA - Do not expect it to be like new vegas.

This.
Main story and the large quests are good, the rest is blah.
Wasted so much time on shitty side quests and building up my home bases that had no impact on the game.

You have to do a little bit at the beginning as part of the story, but you can avoid it after that unless you go for 100% completion.
I'll still say 3 and NV are better, but 4 is still a good time that I put a lot of hours into. Gun play was improved a lot, and for those that claim 4 didn't improve hardly at all graphically from the first 2, try side by side and get back to me. Character creation in 3 and NV are scary. They went with voice acting for your character and that throws a lot of people off. The dialogue gets a lot of shite, but I think it's just because you'll get little snippets for choices and your main character hashes out the response more thoroughly, and people hated that. I still maintain that the responses were the same as when you'd have them all spelled out in the first two, but voice acting threw it off.
Far Harbor is the most lauded of the DLC packs, and the one I really liked, so you could probably be good with just that. Nuka Cola started off interestingly but seemed to lose me, and from what I read, is really boring. So if you had to pick one, Far Harbor for sure.

I’ve spent over 80 hours on the game, mostly because of mods which kept me in the game a lot longer. The story line is ok, could’ve been better, actually I think the side missions were better than the actual main quests. Spent a lot of time building different personal bases for myself, didn’t really get into settlement building. Its a fun game, not my all time favorite of the fallout series, but still, it is a good game.
One piece of advice, stay away from Preston, your game will be ten times more enjoyable

I did not enjoy it at all. Worst Fallout I have played. I did not enjoy the base building or having to worry about settlement invasions. It lost me.

I have over 600 hours in the game so obviously I'm a fan. You don't have to do base building at all but its a fun little side activity. There is also weapon and armor modding which you don't have to do but will help your character. If you just want a big world to explore with interesting characters and stories its a great game.

Far Harbor is the best dlc but there's no need to pick one. You can get the GOTY edition with all dlc for $25 or $30.

It's very slow paced, it gets tedious at points, its bland and repetitive. There is only one settlement you have to build, just for story purposes. Normally, I wouldn't spend too much time on them. Just build enough to hold your weapons and such.
If you decide to get it, make sure you get mods. Mods make the game much more interesting.

you dont have to base build at all. however its pretty well done.

Unless you’re siding with MM, you don’t really need to build any settlement.

I'll forever harbor ill will towards base building after my platinum attempt a few months ago. Getting a settlement to 100 happiness is stupid hard, and I could never find a concrete method as how to get there. Greg Miller and his crew said it was one of the hardest trophies they have ever had to get.

yall are selling some of the side quests short i think.
i understand the burnout point of view, but still...
some of these quests and areas are absolutely fricking nuts, especially if you read the terminals and look around
dunwich borers and that crazy human experimentation building in downtown boston. i forget the name but there is a mind altering gas that is released
plus the npc loyalty quests
fallout purists hate fo4 because it strays from true rpg roots and its quest dialog is poor. and i agree with their POV, they arent wrong.
however for someone just wanting an open world quest game with guns in a post nuclear setting, fo4 is a good option.

Again, if those lines hadn't been spoken and were spelled out on the screen like with 3 and NV, nobody would have given it a second thought

i wanted to play far harbor, but when i sat down to play i soon realized i actually purchased a physical copy and lost it in the flood

yeah, i didnt really mind it. just parroting a main complaint.

There were a ton of sad side stories I'd discover, mainly about families getting separated or trapped in shelters. As quirky as the fallout universe is, it's still dark at times.

I got the achievement purely by accident or a glitch, because I have no idea how I got the trophy when the settlement I built only had one settler (Sheffield). Defenses were good, other than that, nothing else was special.

Its not a glitch. I have explained how to get it with two people on here. I'm sure you can do it with 1.
