You absolutely need to mod it. You need to get the minutemen mod that pretty much keeps Preston from bugging the crap out of you every 3 minutes with new radiant quests.
I didn’t need a mod for that because I left Preston and his groupies in the museum the entire game.

Yes, if you plan on using mods, and you get a good deal on it, w/dlc included.
They fix bethesda broken game.(modders should be paid by bethesda, they make their games playable)

It had very little replay value for me. They didn’t add enough new things to make it feel like a brand new game. The settlement building feature is cool, but needs way more things to build and fine tuning.

It has massive replay for me with all of the modding.
Hell, last night I went into a building which turned out to be a vault. I don't think I found that in my previous ventures into the wasteland.
Since I already know the story and think all of the factions suck, I'm just spending more time wandering around, going into any building that can be accessed.
With the Minutemen Mod, Preston doesn't annoy me much and in 40 hours, I think I've had 2 settlement attacks.
The Sim Settlement mod appears to be working pretty good. That helps manage your settlement with pre-built structures and auto assigns open settlers to new structures.
I do cheat a bit. Weightless items sure makes picking up every item in the wasteland a lot easier.
