Also depends on what size servers you want to play on. My rig was $650 (without an OS) and I run BF3 at 1080p full blown graphics, but I rarely play servers iwht 32 and never play 64.
Put a large, LARGE emphasis on the video card. The vast majority of your gaming experience comes from that one piece of hardware. Spend ~250 on just that imo.

It's funny, I assembled my computer 3ish years ago from about 500 bucks.. and pretty much still run medium to high settings on everything
