I played about 6 hours yesterday. Finished the hunting lodge side mission. This game is amazing so far, story gets better for you guys.
Sic-- spear combat is supposed to be somewhat slow. This is not a beat um up. Stealth, looking for weaknesses and traps are your friends. There are so many options to take down enemies. I only use my spear when I royally f up or see something really weak.
Slide and jump shooting things is so fun.

Yeah, was talking to a friend about that this morning. I don't want to go all hack-n-slash, but when they bum rush you, I want to feel I can handle it
Plus, in a bunch of the preview videos I saw, getting a machine down to the point where you can finish them off with a spear hack seemed to happen a lot.

If you get caught and they bum rush you... You better run and get cover. Unless you are just fighting the first area guys.
As for getting them down and spear hacking. You can do that. The little machines fall over with an r2 hit pretty easy.

R1 is stealth kills. Or to critical hit a downed machine.
In standard spear combat, R1 is quick attacks (also knocks parts off) and R2 is strong attacks (can knock small enemies over).
Holding triangle is how you take over machines, but you need to unlock that after a boss fight.
