I am not disagreeing with anything already mentioned. I will add super pitfall on nes. It was not until years later that I read about what you needed to do, which of course is impossible.

Of recent memory, I have found wipeout HD pretty hard, the end boss of kill zone 2 pretty hard (on hardest level), and storming the final building on call of duty WaW on veteran to be pretty difficult.

King's Quest, (and a myriad of other text adventure games). Without cheating from a source or someone else who already knew, I can't imagine how many hours of trial and error they would take. I will not believe anyone who ever tells me they beat it without cheating.

Ninja Gaiden 1 on the hardest difficulty still keeps me up at night. My butthole has never felt so raw until after that fight with the ghost samurai. That whole level was a bitch.

The first one Xbox? It took me a long long time but I was able to beat the game on the hardest difficulty. There was a topic years ago on gamefaqs of people suffering through it. It was amusing to read.

There's a specific combo (don't remember what it is anymore) that makes dealing with them a piece of cake. Without it they're way up there with the most annoyingly hard enemies.

I beat IV without cheating. But that was it. The rest took research when the internet was still young. King's Quest. Space Quest. Gabrial Knight, etc.

I can beat 1 and 2. I had 3-6 also but never devoted as much time. 2 was my favorite game of all time growing up.

The early police quests, kings quests and space quests all had some part that you had to type really fast and type the right thing to move on. I forgot about those. You are right about the internet too. Prodigy only got you so far...

I guess I am old.

I was on the final level of Super Ghosts and Goblins when I was inexplicably warped back to the graveyard. I sat there for a moment, rethinking life.

Yup, you gotta beat it twice to truly beat the game. No thanks.

Wizards and Warriors? That game was tough but beatable. It was also great.

Faxandu is another story.

Crystalis, also extremely tough, but beatable.

I had forgotten about Solstice and Faxanadu until I read this thread, and now I'm crying on the inside.

I used to have Faxanadu, it was pretty cool. Chrysalis was another cool one. I beat both of those so they must not have been too hard.

Solstice is awesome. Equinox is just like it for the SNES, also very good but tough due to the weird isometric layout.

I general old games were so hard. I remember dieing a lot in final fantasy. The weapons had no stats if I remeber and the whole game is played blind basically.
