Cool story.
I have more games in my backlog than I can possibly find the time to play, and the ones I do play provide hundreds of hours of entertainment. I love the gaming industry

The simple truth is that the triple A industry got quickly taken away from actual gamers by corporate flunkies and political activists.
All the legendary franchises and studios that build the industry over the past 40 years were almost all founded by a small group of dude bro gamers or because of exceptionally talented single individuals. THere was a lot of creativity, a lot of freedom, a lot of experimentation. Budgets and dev cycles were much smaller and shorter. The games were made by people who loved games.
Too much industry consolidation, mergers, gigantic studios, leading to the absolute worst of corporate mandates and decision making.
And also it's pretty much impossible to find a studio that isn't overrun by LGBT, feminists, bluesky type lunatics.
It's been a pretty much devastating 1/2 punch.
The good news is that indie games and A, AA type games are better than ever and technology progress has enabled them to look and play every bit as good at AAA games.
We'll always have great games to play, but the big budget studios probably won't be the ones making anything of substance anymore, much in the same way modern movie studios are incapable of making films people actually care about anymore.

There's a third problem. Computers are getting too powerful.
That leads to putting too much emphasis on taking advantage of computing power instead of being creative. Atari programmers had virtually no room to work so they had to be very good at making something that would hold your attention.

Yes, I heard it succintly once put
"Video games were better when they were worse"
When graphics, sound, animations, were all crude, the thing that made games stand apart was gameplay and fun and interesting mechanics.
Limitations can be good thing as they force people to work hard and think of unique solutions.
The lack of technical "limitations" has in many ways been a curse. It's why games now have 200GB install sizes and shite.
Graphics, animations, motion capture, story, characters, all that stuff now overshadows the actual game and has simply added a ridiculous amount of time, expense, and complexity tot he process.

No, it doesn’t. Some games suck. Some studios suck. Some devs suck. Some publishers suck.
But as long as more good to great games come out every year than I’ll ever have time to play, the industry is just fine.

Eventually they all hit the Steam sale and you can pick them up for 75% off.

Same thing happened to movies. Everything went into special effects instead of plot development.

It’s simpler than that. Corporations are the only ones that can afford to develop AAA games.
Corporate culture inherently markets to everyone which appeals to nobody.

Today’s AAA industry is absolute fricking trash. What more needs to be said?

“AAA industry” needs to be defined.

These 400-500 million dollar budgets and 800+ member dev teams simply are not necessary to make a high quality game.

Correct. Some of the best games of all time aren't the ones with the best graphics
That's why I laugh at people like Linus from Linus Tech tips obsessing over the frame rate on whatever game they're playing. I get that's what he's supposed to focus on at that channel but at what point have we lost the plot? Resolution and frame rates are great but what if the game itself sucks?

Look at the EA sports football games. They look amazing now but they aren’t half as fun and the control responsiveness is worse than 20 years ago.

As long as there are independent and small companies making games, and there are tons of them, gaming will be fine.
