Looking at the games selection though, I think they're banking on a certain level of nostalgia
Yes but games and the console that holds nostalgia for most of us here is the PS2.
Edt: The Dreamcast holds more nostalgia than the PS1.

I don't necessarily disagree with any of that. A Dreamcast Classic would print money for Sega.
I'm just saying that I think Sony is banking on nostalgia for that 1996-1998 era of the Playstation rather than 99-01. I can somewhat relate seeing as I get a kick out of going back to my Sega Saturn every now and then.

Sorry for not being clearer.
I also agree with this line of thinking that Sony believes nostalgia will sell units. Just think they are wrong on this one.
Think Sony is misunderstanding their NA market.
Edt: Also like Sic said in the OP. Those titles really do not hold up in terms of controls and graphics.

“You have actually played Battle Arena Toshinden. I’m sorry for you.”

A lot of the early years of PS games either don’t hold up well or were trash when released.
There’s also a third category, “emulated / remastered games”, which doesn’t really translate well to a retro console.
Recursive emulation, where you emulate a Playstation emulating an arcade game like Pac-Man or Galaga, isn’t really a selling point when you can get most of those titles for cheap on current gen consoles.

Recursive emulation
You mean hardware emulation?

Recursive in this case meaning “an emulator within an emulator.”
Hardware emulation to do software emulation of 40 year old arcade games is questionable, even for people who love classic arcade games like I do. Namco Museum was actually the selling point for me on PS1 and it wouldn’t be for me when it comes to the classic.

Never heard the term I think.
Hardware emulators are cheaper now. Look into the FPGA MisTer. They have Hats for every console and some pHats.

I wonder what Psycho Mantis is going to read this time?
He's going to have a hard time using his psychokinetic powers to move these non-Dualshock controllers.

In programming terms, recursion is when you keep running a process within a process.
It eventually resolves by handling all calls in Last In First Out order.

I understand. I mean in the context of emulators.

What a shitty lineup.
Toshinden - quality launch title that aged quickly
Cool Boarders 2 - smh
Destruction Derby - meh
Final Fantasy 7 - obviously belongs
Grand Theft Auto - good luck playing this garbage now
IQ - fun game I guess but meh
Jumping Flash - same as Toshinden
Metal Gear Solid - obviously belongs
Mr Driller - never even knew that was on PS1
Oddworld 1 - quality game
Rayman - meh
RE DC - probably the shitty Dual Shock version
Persona - meh
Ridge Racer 4 - meh
Puzzle Fighter - quality game
Syphon Filter - has aged terribly
Tekken 3 - obviously belongs
Rainbow Six - the PS1 port was AWFUL
Twisted Metal - why not 2 instead
Wild Arms - quality game

Pretty weak line up was really hoping Tony Hawk and Hot Shots would be on here.
Also RE 2 >>>>>> All other RE games

Definitely underwhelming. Missed opportunity to not have some of the bigger sports games like Hot Shots and Tony Hawk. They were kinda hampered by the not being able to choose Crash, Spyro, and Medievil due to their full remakes.

It's too bad the PSTV is so expensive now. It was selling for $30 on Amazon not that long ago and would be a great alternative to this.

Tony Hawk would suck without the original music anyhow.
Still should've gotten at least ONE Crash game. It's been well over a year since the collection came out and it was basically Sony's Mario or Sonic.

Yeah... Still wondering what is fans will have to do to drive a remake of The Legend of Dragoon.
I would buy this if tLOD were the only title included.

No Symphony
Would snatch that bitch in a heartbeat if it had that on there.

Not having Legend of Dragoon is a gigantic mistake.
Can't wait till the PS2 Classic, so long as they find a way to resurrect SSX Tricky.
