So what I’m gathering after a brief combover of reviews is that SE can’t help themselves and had to cram in some kingdom hearts multiple timeline/dimension bullshite. Unbelievable.
The story was fine - all you had to do flesh out the areas, implement an enjoyable combat system, and pepper in some fun side content. Check those boxes and you have a smash hit. How do you frick that up?

Didn’t want to do spoilers but yes.
Basically damn shadows fight you every time you are changing reality. Their goal is to keep the reality intact. But Cloud and others defeat them to change the story/destiny.
The ghost are the fans, the heros are Square Enix. Is a type of metaphor.

Yeah sounds like some KH bullshite but hopefully it won't get too retarded. I'm calling it now though, Tifa will bite the bullet instead of Aerith in the remake.

Either way, sounds like I need to speed up my playthrough of the original because the remake spoils the rest of the game. I know about the big Aerith spoiler (like you said it's pretty much the Darth Vader spoiler of video games) but I'm still in the dark about everything else and I'd like to keep it that way.

A lot of people I have talked to who are playing the remake for the first time are calling it one of the best games they have ever played.
I’m okay with it not being 100% true to the original and having a more casual appeal...because guess what? The original is still out there and can still be played. I have played the original...now I get to play the remake...with more lore and stuff to do and places to see...if I don’t like it oh well...there is still the original. I wouldn’t be as excited if this was just a re-skin.

I think the fear is they have given themselves carte blanche to make crazy changes.
However that doesn't mean they have to do that or even will do that.
In the upcoming parts 2 and 3 they can still choose to follow the original story pretty faithfully if they want to.
What people will not like is if they start dramatically altering major plot points down the road.

For sure.
Especially how it ramps up in the final chapters after staying true early on.
There really is no coming back from it.
And I do not think the Aerith thing will be farfetched at all. I almost expect it.

Yeah, if they go full on alternate reality, they will take several opportunities to subvert expectations.
Watch cloud die in part 2 only to be replaced by a rehabilitated Zack who will then be romantically involved with a no longer murdered Aerith.
