Cloud is not quite sure of who he is. It gets even worse when you reach the Northern Crater and Sephiroth mindfricks him so hard he doesn't even believe he's a real person anymore.

I don’t think you will regret the dive in. Just enjoy it for what it is. A really really really great game.

I was content to watch streams of FF7 Remake since I don't have a PS4, even though the original was one of the formative games in my young life. However, after catching the ending on a stream and (at least kinda) understanding what's happening I now think I'm going to have to give in and get it. Like someone said above, let FF7 be FF7 and FF7M be FF7M. I think they'll hit all the major story beats and add in some new ones, and now I want to take part in it.

Good way to look at it.

But it is not how this game was advertised and it's not what fans have been asking for, for the last 20 years.

The game is not a remake. It is essentially a sequel, that is running parallel to the original timeline.

A lot of fans lost their shite when they found out that Steve Burton, Rachel Leigh Cook and Mena Suvari weren't going to be voicing Cloud, Tifa and Aerith.

Those same fans might burn down Square-Enix if Steve Blum doesn't voice Vincent.

I disagree.

The game is a remake until the very end. There are a few minor changes to the story but by and large it's faithful to the first four or five hours of the original game. It only really starts to diverge once you defeat Motor Ball.

There's a reason why this wasn't called Final Fantasy VII Remake Part I. The twist at the end of the game is that it's not going to be a straight up remake of the 1997 original.

You literally meet Sephiroth after the first reactor bombing. And time cops.

That's not minor to me. All the Jessie/Avalanche expansions are minor and nice additions. Things like that are great.

That is not Sephiroth from the past. It is the future or current timeline Sephiroth. He fricks with Aerith. It is why the time cops show up. He is already trying to alter things.

Maybe the version in the fire was but not the one in the next scene.

exactly. that's the kind of stuff they should be expanding upon. absolutely loved the section where you go to Jessie's parents' house. explore the residential area, get to go through her parents' room, see her dad, inspect all the shite. stuff like that is amazing and adds to the world/characters since we never got to experience that before

Don't be so obtuse. Adding depth to a story is not the same as outright changing it.

You don't see an actual version of Sephiroth until the Drum. You know why this is true? It is the first time someone other than Cloud sees him.

So when Robocop was remade and there was no Clarence Boddiker or Ann Lewis, did everyone lose their shite?

Absolutely not. Sephiroth can make Cloud see whatever he wants. That scene where he messes with Cloud is him trying to mess with the timeline. Aerith is supposed to be long gone before the troops show up. It is why the time cops show up to shoo her away.

It's not his physical body.

He also taunts him about not saving Aerith. As the current cloud has no idea what he is talking about.
