I don't have time for an MMO, but frick it, I want to see how it ended up.

I railed against this game harder than just about anyone at initial release, and again when I tried it once more in late 2011.
With that said, to say that there have been vast improvements would be an understatement. This is truly a completely different game.
And with that also said, the FFXIV lore and setting are still dull, bordering on obnoxious for me. I'm glad to witness something positive happening to the turbulent Final Fantasy franchise, but I will probably pass on this unless it manages something other than typical contemporary JRPG writing and characterization.

This thread needed my blanket of skepticism.
I have gotten to where a game needs to be particularly special in order for me to buy a client and pay a subscription. This market is just too saturated to financially commit to an average - above average game. I hope it's fantastic... I'm sure you and Sicboy will let me know if it is.

Andvari will be your go to as far as the story. I'll pay attention to it to a degree, but mostly skip through it. The draw for me, as always, is playing with friends.

From what I gather, they tried to break away from the norm when 14 first released with no success. The game was rushed also. From what it looks like in beta so far, they are reeling a lot back in to jive with most MMO's on the market.
And it will support a gamepad for any that might interest.

More games should try to emulate EQ1, rather than WoW.
EQ1 was a better game than WoW in nearly every way. WoW won out because it was super easy and prettier in a cartoony way.

I wouldnt say WoW "won out" over EQ1
WOW didnt come out until late 2005. EQ came out in what, 1998 or 99?
EQ created the market IMO
WoW continues to dominate due to many reasons. Nothing will dethrone wow.
But, there is still plenty market share for other MMOs to generate money and entertainment

EQ was great, but it was a niche game because it required a group to do anything, and in an era where games didn't hold your hand, EQ practically threw you in and left you for dead. It pretty much required the use of online resources to accomplish anything.
I feel like EQ is the greatest MMO ever, but WoW expanded the market by creating the solo experience. Every class could get to max level solo, and quests felt much less grindy than the system in EQ.
Nowadays, you have a bunch of companies copying WoW and charging a subscription for their games just because EQ and WoW did it. Their games lack true substance and no one feels like paying for their sub-par products.

No. I prefer required needing to group to get anything done in an MMO but it's an unpopular opinion.

The problem with games nowadays they hold your hand too much and you don't get that great feeling of accomplishing something. I loved how dying in eq was brutal where you lost exp and you had to retrieve your corpse.

You need a balance. I like being able to log in to 14, grab some leve quests, and just grind by myself for a few hours. Also a blast with 3 others.
