Ever Wonder Just How a Particular Game or Genre is SO Popular?

I believe I have been able to understand trends and popularity of different games and types of games over the years. For example, I can totally understand the competitive nature of games like Halo and CoD, the appeal of massive battles in battlefield, the various class mechanics and interdependence between them in MOBAs, and competitive PVP and raiding in MMORPGs.

Why though are Battle Royale games so popular? It's literally just a game where you get dropped off in this huge map with like 99 other players to see how long you can last

Because you only get one try. No multiplayer game has ever given me the same rush that Fortnite does when you're in a Top 5 situation and you know that the slightest move could cost you the game

Overwatch came close with some tight finishes, but that's it. Going 30-2 in COD doesn't get my dick hard anymore

There are other shooters out there that have elimination game modes.

I think the thing with the Battle Royale games is your chances of winning a match is actually pretty slim unless you are pretty skilled. In other games, it's usually team based so as long as you don't totally suck you can still meaningfully contribute to a winning team, and obviously your odds of victory are much higher.

100% correct. Even Ninja, one of the top players in the world, only has a 35% win rate in solos.

In BR, one mistake and it's game over. No respawns.

It's a rush. Especially when you start mowing people down and you get the rush of killing, knowing the more you kill, the more attention you are creating your way.

shite on PUBG all you want, but when you get to top 10, there is nothing in gaming like it.

Like others have said, there is just a special feeling when you win a game of Fortnite or pull off a crazy clutch to keep your team in the game.

The only game mode I have enjoyed more than BR games are Trials of Osiris in Destiny 1.

Not surprising that I don't understand people's justification for enjoying games whose popularity I don't understand

That percentage is ridiculous regardless.

With the parameters of the game, that kind of success rate is ridiculous. It’s like how you see 50-60% 3-point shooting in the NBA and you’re like....forreal? From someone who doesn’t care or know sports all that well, but in all reality, that kind of percentage in a pro setting is ridiculous.

absolutely, im not knocking it. Mine is like 5.7% taking into account all modes

I don't know how much he knows, but most people would expect a top player in the world to have a much higher win%. That just shows how hard it is to win

Some Minecraft servers had a similar game modeled after the Hunger Games and it was rather fun.

I understand the popularity of this better than I do MOBA's like League of Legends.

Part of it, is that this is a new development. It was only recently x. that internet speeds, modems, routers, and computers could communicate well enough to allow for such a game. A PVP with that many people on a large open world terrain.

Plus, it's just an alternate gametype under the same basic umbrella as Halo and COD, which you already mentioned.

I'm currently sitting in the top . 3% of squads and the skill difference between myself and the leaderboard is huge.

I can't imagine how they get top 10 70% plus of the time.

Yes, but does giving an off-hand brag about going 30-2 in CoD still give it to you? ;p

If someone really wanted to do this, it would be very achievable by just camping out.
