re: Even if I wanted to buy a Switch...

I love my switch because I'm done with Playstation and Xbox.I've never been one who was overly attached to exclusives (save for the Nintendo ones) so it makes sense for me. It's my switch and pc now.

Honestly, I would do it for that but I can't get into BotW, I played Odyssey on my friends switch, and it was fun, but I had no desire to go moon hunting after the end. I'll not be interested in a Donkey Kong game until they go back to 3D, and where's my Metroid?
I bored of Mario Kart a long time ago, and my feelings towards Smash Brothers is well documented here.

Thanks for all of the obvious advice, everyone
Just something I observed waiting for my car to be done.

You say the switch is not really worth it for you and then name some of its biggest games and say you dont really care for them
you say obvious things you'll get obvious responses

Because the price point for games is too high.

and the fact that you dont really like the games all that much apparently

Why exactly are they doing this? I never got the impression that the game got boring really fast. Honest question, is it a big seller?
Pretty big in Japan. I believe it's over 1.5 mil in Sales, and is a platform unique title.
The online lobbies are still packed. Easy to find online games in. I play it from time to time still.

I'm not saying they need to be $20 or $60. There's in between to play with.
It isn't that simple if you understand a little about economics. There's things like perceived value that work against you. And many people, maybe not you, already see a lack of value in nintendo IPs, as in, they aren't big $60 AAA games. If Nintendo prices them like that, that will cement the belief.

This is literally only true for the 3rd party ports, and ONLY because they have received the scheduled price drop in all cases.
This isn't true for Nintendo IPs/1st and 2nd Party Games.

It did alright in Japan. If it is indeed over 1.5m, we know from Media Create/Famitsu (sales trackers in Japan) that it's hovering in the 250-300k range.

Well that's just wrong.
Why is a $60 price point for a game wrong? Why is it wrong after a year or 2?
Because that...

Was at walmart just now and I was blown away at how many games were still $60 and $50. Some of them I didn't know if they had just been released, so that I can kind of understand. But Arms is still $60? 1 2 Switch is $50? I get BotW is a "system seller" and still selling really well, but that's way overdue for a price drop. Every. Single. Mario. Game is still $60, even the Rabbids game. Splatoon 2 is full price, a game I figured they'd drop down in price with their new online service releasing.
Prices should just drop because....?

I've never seen a fan base so adamantly defend getting taken advantage of.

I already said the 3rd party port prices are ridiculous (And I've only bought one of them, Doom).
In terms of first party games, I've already made the argument that they don't do in game sales, currencies, chests, and very few season passes (Only being on Kingdom Battle, BotW, Xenoblade, and now Smash), so I think it's fair to leave the price alone. I think it's ok tactic to drop the price when you have other means of recouping investments.
Splatoon and Arms had tons of updates with No cost (the only paid update for Splatoon was a single player campaign). No in game purchases, no season pass, and still constant updates. I haven't seen you comment on that once outside of wondering why they update Arms at all....
And they do have some sales where they have dropped 1-2 Switch. A normal consumer tactic for probably a few hundred years and then it goes back to where it was - again, pretty common.
So what is the big deal here? Why must games drop prices? Answer that question, and maybe there's a discussion here....
Outside of sales events, most products stay the price they are until they are discontinued, and then the aftermarket price fluctuates.
A Kitchen Aid mixer has been $300+ for a few decades now. Nice flooring is always going to run you $8-12 /sq. ft. The Beach Boys Pet Sounds is still $10 for the album. Movies prices go up, not down. Blu Ray prices are typically the same until they hit the bargin section of Best Buy after a few years.
Again, this is a weird anti-Nintendo reaction where they are held to different standards than literally anything else.

Additionally, what's more ridiculous than a $60 game that doesn't drop in price?
Paying $60 for a game that puts a large portion of content behind massive time gates and/or chest mechanisms. Sure, that game may drop to $40 or lower, but that's because the expectation is that you are going to spend $100 or more on the game in the long run.
That's ridiculous.
Here's Black Ops 4 and it's $130 Digital Deluxe Edition and $20 currency
Spider-Man's $80 Edition
The FF XV that is half off, but wait.... the $25 Season Pass... and Other add on content
How about Street Fighter 5 and All of the fighters you have to pay extra money for.
If you bought everything for any of these games, you are spending at worst over $50 in the case of FFXV and are often spending more. And yes, some of these games are new, but I'm pointing out the total costs and initial costs. Nintendo doesn't do it for any game, only when it matters. Most companies are doing DLC, pre-order bonuses, etc. for every release. They have more opportunities to get their investment back and make money. It isn't a conspiracy it's a different pricing model.
And here's Arms. Multiple updates. New Characters Stages and Modes. Only $60. Full game, no season pass.
Super Mario Odyssey New game modes, new costumes, new challenges, new MP content. $60. Odyssey has been $60 since day 1. No $130 edition, no season pass, no paid dlc.
Different models. $60 for a long span or massively expensive up front and/or smaller revenue over time.

Never really thought about it all like that. Typically don’t pay as much attention to pricing as I probably should but Freauxzen makes a lot of good points here.
Interesting to look at both models. Almost makes you pine for a straight (even slightly higher price) if youre one get mixed up in a lot of in game purchases or things of that nature.

I’ll happily put down $60 for super smash.

Well, I’d also happily put down $60 for BOTW. You’re easily getting over an hour per dollar worth of gameplay from that.

The switch is my first Nintendo console that I have bought multiple indie games for because of their pricing practices.
Playing Hollow Knight on a portable device has been awesome. Playing rocket league, or stardew, or even at full price: octopath traveler, an old school rpg on the go has been amazing.
BUT, gard is incorrect, it's not a portable tax, it's that Nintendo doesn't play "drop price" game. It's the same reason some stores never drop their prices, some car companies sell the exact same car as their normal car and call it a "luxury car" and people buy them like hotcakes... Or Apple computers / phones... $250 of equipment sold for $2000. It's a luxury tax - but it's also a legit business strategy where you never let your product go on sale, because it would "cheapen" what it's worth to the consumer.
Like another poster said, it's a pretty new practice, and I just don't think Nintendo wants to join in.
