I was thinking that one too as the character design is something that pretty much everyone in the mainstream press has cited as one of the reason for its failure. Then you have games like Horizon Forbidden West that are still critically acclaimed and sold reasonably well but may have lost some sales due to the character design not being pleasing to some fans and being perceived as "woke changes". The other side is games like The Last of Us where the social commentary is front and center and it does extremely well and even expands its story and social messaging in other forms of media.
I think a lot of the the way social messaging is perceived as either positive or negative by gamers boils down to how its introduced in the game and how it either enhances or impairs some aspect of the game.

If it doesnt effect gameplay and is limited to character creation does that still bother you?

Fair question.
It's also a big if. Some games have woke in it but make it entirely optional (BG3), some make it mandatory. I'm not a DA fan, so I'm curious how this all plays out.
The character creator looks pretty slanted to one bias, though. Can make a fat tranny with top surgery scars and a dick bulge, but can't make a big-titty babe with a Kardashian arse. It's an indicator, but that's all it is for now.

yea thats fair criticism too.... In RPG's it doesnt bother me to give folks as many options as possible to create their own character, especially in a something like Cyberpunk where transexual/transhuman alterations are baked into the setting.

Starfield had pronouns. . . .that are then never used at all

perhaps...perhaps not. I thought some of the dialogue in TLoU2 was a bit cringe but Ellie still felt like a human that existed in that world or in ours. Same with the character Lev. And I loved the gameplay and pretty much everything about it(pacing was off at times) Same with Cyberpunk and other RPGs that have homosexual or trans characters. If they are well written and feel like they belong in that story or setting it usually works for me.
When a character like say Aloy, from Horizon is altered from a previous incarnation in what appears to be an intentional manner to look less feminine and less attractive it does piss me off a bit. Its ok for women to appear like women and be beautiful.

You can add to that list all day.
I would argue many games dramatically under perform these days thanks to woke-lite stuff, just something as simple an unnecessary female protagonist.
Perfect example is a game like Returnal. Sony attempted to hype it up a little bit when it came out but I took one look at the protag and never even considered getting it.
It probably had no politics or social commentary in it at all, the little I saw of it looked interesting and possibly even like a decent game. Reviews were fairly solid too.
Who the hell wants to play as really ugly middle aged lesbian? Who is the target audience for this game? I"m guessing mannish 40 year old lesbians aren't really PS5's main demo, so why does the main character look like this?
This game absolutely sold much worse than it would have had they put a dude or a hot chick as the main character.
Isn't giving your potential customers what they want good business? They value their social agenda more than sales.

If you read HouseMarque's developers commentary they wanted to create a character that was a middle aged astronaut whose look reflects that has been hardened through some shite in her life. And well she looks like a middle aged female astronaut . And while the game looks like and is a action packed roguelike shooter the story goes to some pretty dark places and depending on how you interpret the story, (and its a fascinating one to piece together) the character is suffering from mental illness and or severe depression. So a hot chick or a roided dude probably would not have meshed well with the themes. Is she a too butch looking ..I mean for my tastes yea but I understand what the developers were going for in that case.

Returnal had an awesome gameplay loop (and I detest roguelikes) but the story and narrative presentation were complete arse.

Ah the blessing and the curse of RPGs in the mainstream. Sure you sell more copies, but the mind and soul of the game is gone.
I would be interested to know what the total sales of each title are to date. Dragon Age Origins figures only account to 3.2 million as of Feb 2010, just 4 months after release. It had the most DLC and a legit expansion so my conspiracy theory is that it had higher numbers than DAI.

Could you make any sense of the story? I still don't exactly understand it.

It fricking is paid for. PCgamer are s bunch of shill hacks. Look at their reviews of Concord, you know the game Sony shut down just 2 weeks after launch. DA looks like straight garbage. Pull your head out of your arse.
