Hackers tapped into servers at Electronic Arts on Thursday, making off with key game files for popular titles, including FIFA 21. The data is now reportedly up for sale on the dark web.

The hackers claim to have made off with 780GB of data from EA servers, including the source code for FIFA 21 and the code for its matchmaking server, Vice reported. Also snatched: the source code for Frostbite, the engine that powers popular EA titles like Battlefield, the news outlet said.

What doesn't it even mean to have a source code stolen? Free games?

Is this a form of anti-ransomware, where the hacker threatens to make all extras and loot crates available for free without premium purchases?

Often people can cheat with impunity, and there's nothing the developer can do about it.

I think it amounts to nothing other than they can say they have the source code. If it ever gets used in another game, EA would just sue the shite out of them.

From the Vice article:

quote:

"Once inside the chat, we messaged a IT Support members we explain to them we lost our phone at a party last night," the representative said.

The hackers then requested a multifactor authentication token from EA IT support to gain access to EA's corporate network. The representative said this was successful two times

What a fricking clown show. If someone loses their phone (and therefore MFA), we don't just give them access to the damn network.

EA wasn't hacked. Their helpdesk are a bunch of idiots and just gave them the damn credentials.

Game or engine = highly complex dish at world class restaurant

Source code = the recipe

That and their "dynamic knowledge-based authentication" procedures were poor.

Does this mean they will be scrapping Frostbite for another engine?

If so, maybe BioWare employees leaked it because they are tired of designing in an engine not meant for what EA tried to use it for.
