So I guess they're taking a page from Kingdom Come and making Shazam a lackey of Luthor?

All I've seen is stuff on being heroes? I don't want to be Batman, as much as I love the character, I want to create my own.
I've seen so little on the creation and available powers information that my anticipation for this games remains at zero.

The main selling point of this game is the feature of playing alongside popular DC superheroes. Whereas other companies like NCSoft emphasize the social and min-maxing aspect of their MMOs, Bioware and now Sony are going in a direction that developers like NCSoft never have, which is giving your involvement in the game some gravity. Quick, name another MMO in which you feel like anything other than Joe Blow #396,482 out to join an average guild and loot average gear and partake in average quests and generally be no more heroic than your normal self.
Socially, there is merit to earning a place within an online society, but it's not quite the same as feeling like the character you have immersed yourself in belongs within a grand scheme.
I think we'll see more of the gameplay elements of both SW:TOR and DC Universe as they approach (DC Universe isn't so far off, I know), but for now these companies are just trying to get us excited about something different in the MMO market for a change.
With all of that said, I've been told this is to be a almost completely action oriented game with a great physics engine, which will be a lot of fun if done correctly and a lot of unplayable fail if executed like Alpha Protocol.

Yeah but if I want to play as Batman, I'm sorry but Arkham Asylum is unparalleled in terms of the Batman experience. I just think if they are focusing on BEING the major heroes, instead of being JoeBlow #2345 I'll be Batman#2345 and Green Lantern#2345. What's the difference?

Agreed. But there's no way an unfocused MMO game can get every hero right. There's no topping Arkham or Batman:TAS on the SNES in terms of Batman games. Not happening.

Unless I've misunderstood something about this game, I don't think anyone will be playing as canon superheroes at all. Merely fighting with them, interacting with them, accepting tasks from them, and the like. This is quite a significant difference from a game like City of Heroes, where you take quests from some strange civilian or a generic superhero. It's still not that different from WoW, though, where you can interact with important characters from Warcraft lore. Again, we'll see. For now, it's just a selling point. No telling if it will actually offer a fresh experience until beta opens.

Yeah I'm watching the video above, that's the first one I've seen that shows a Non-DC Hero player character honestly.

City of Heroes,
Loved City of Heroes and have even debated going back with that new expansion. That game is good.
I followed Champions, but that seemed to suck. WIthout a CoH2 on the horizon, this seems to be the only viable Superhero game.

THat's what I'm thinking from the video above. It's a selling point that didn't sell me on the game.
There is some part of the game where you play as a DC hero though I know for sure.

you can play as bad guys or villains and from what i can tell you don't play as ANY original super hero. you must create your own.
you fight each other but the ultimate goal is to defeat brainiack (sp)

It just seemed all the marketing was on DC Heroes. There's been so little about what powers the player can choose, what they can look like, etc. Even the official site just pimps wonder woman and green lantern and not actual player characters.
Misunderstanding on my part, but still. Maybe poor marketing.

totally understand where you're coming from. marketing is pretty bad especially for a game coming out in november.

This game seems to go many steps beyond what CoX was. Instead of just going to see the main heroes to level up, you actually work for, with, or against them.
-You can choose to be a hero or a villain
--Whichever you choose you then choose an "Iconic" to follow (think of this as a mentor - for the heroes thus far we know of Supes, WW, and Bats while their counterparts of Lex, Circe & Joker will be mentors for the villains). These characters each have their own unique storylines (as far as quests/missions go), thus following Supes is going to give you a bit of a different mission than Batman. Also, playing a villain means you play the opposite role (in the demo'd mission, as a villain you HELP Harley capture Robin, in some missions you may play against other players that are playing heroes).
---So you aren't playing Batman, but you are sort of like an unofficial apprentice. Lind of like a Robin. As you grow in levels, you become more of a Nightwing, then eventually you are on Batman's level. One of the fun things is that if you ditch missions Batman sends you, he eventually responds more and more pissily to you (this is true of all the Iconics, but Batman being pissed at you is something altogether different from the rest of them)
-Thus far the full powers haven't been announced, but whatever you choose will have a ranged and melee attack. The base powers thus far are nature, tech, fire, ice, magic (I think), and there is question as to whether hard light will be available at launch (Green Lantern's power).
-Within these basic power foundations are trees that branch off (tremors, plants, strength, heat vision, etc). As you progress, your mastery of the base power gets better, thus strengthening your power (the video in the 2nd link explains this better).
-You can pick your travel power at the beginning of the game (so no need to wait like in CoX).
-The Shazam guy is Black Adam, the original hero created by the wizard Shazam way back in ancient Egypt. He went power mad and I think the wizard banished him on the other side of the universe or something. He's basically an evil version of Capt. Marvel.

Yeah, they really haven't tried marketing it yet. In typical SOE fashion they are waiting to see if word-of-mouth will be enough so they don't have to put out a media blitz. While the game looks fantastically addictive to me, I really would like to see them at least run the cinematic trailer on tv. It's too bad the GL movie isn't until next year, it would make a GREAT tie-in on launch (but maybe they will have a GL expansion for it?)

The cinematic trailer is 6.5 minutes though

Some of it sounds interesting, but I'm all about player creation, freedom of choice in powers, the structure of PC development. And it seems there is very little info on this, which made me believe that wasn't a central part.
Any other MMO, we would probably know max level by now. Whether the game is class or skill based, skill trees or available powers, skill progression, etc.
It just seems they spent so much time marketing "DC" that they haven't really done much else.

Eh, you could get a travel power by level 10 in CoH. And CoH's zones were all compact enough for it to not be a big deal. And they got teleportation right, that was awesome as power-inefficient as it was.

So I will be able to be a Lantern?

Not as of right now, no. If hard light powers make it in by release then you could make something that looks, works and feels like a lantern though. I'm willing to bet there will be a tie-in release of a GL-based expansion with the GL movie next year though.
