Well, I'm calling it quits for tonight. I finally made it to the first Blighttown bonfire.

Kirk the Knight of Thorns (I think that is his name) is a black knight NPC who invades 3 times throughout the game. He drops a sword and a shield.
If you defeat him all 3 times, you get his armor.
He won't invade after you've killed the boss for that area, as I discovered afterwards.

I had an invasion when in the Depths, but I thought it was a human. I don't remember picking up a sword or shield though, so maybe it was a human.
