For those that don’t know, this is a M rated very high graphic turn based combat game with some real time elements like parry and counter. It looks absolutely incredible. The just of the story is “the painter” paints a number every year and all people that age fade away. Hence 33 in the title. Here’s the 2 minute trailer for anyone who thinks it sounds good. It releases spring 2025

Holy shite. That trailer was awesome.

I don’t think I could be more in.

I love turn based combat and the story seems awesome.

The story seems really interesting. I want to know more.

My thoughts as well. They’re very tight lip with it. Did a voice acting reveal for some characters weeks back Clive from FF16, shadow heart from bg3, and Charlie cox from daredevil all doing voice work. Also we only have a release window spring 2025 so that’s like Feb to June. There’s also still very real chance this can’t ship for Xbox since the lower series can’t play it. At least not for a while till they get it running on it

Also this being a quote from the dev CEO makes me hard

One of the goals of Clair Obscur was to create a high fidelity turn based RPG, which he felt had been neglected by AAA game developers. According to Broche, Clair Obscur takes inspiration from Japanese role-playing games, with Broche noting the Final Fantasy and Persona series' specifically. I wonder if they’ll use a riff on personas calendar system in some way?

It's a day one Game Pass release and the announcement trailer you linked in your OP was revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase back in June.

My bad then I heard false info. Anything about this game has been incredibly sparse

Yeah it's hard to find a lot about it yet. Here's an article from last month about the game. LINK

The devs have a YouTube channel with a cast reveal and a gameplay preview, as well as some music tracks. LINK

Here's the gameplay preview:

I’m very excited to see how they mix up turn based with whatever real time stuff they mix in. So far it looks like they’ve just shown parry counter and certain button combos but I’m sure there’s more. These dudes cooking up an entire new genre combat system

I can't wait for this game. I want more turn based RPGs and this looks so good I'm hoping it moves the industry back towards turn based games.

Same. I hate that RPGs have essentially become third person shooters.

I want more variations across all types of games but especially RPGs. It seems almost everything made as an “rpg” today is really just an rpg lite wearing its name as a skin suit, and I’m not insulting games like that. Hell I love some of them. I just wish they were options instead of hostile takeovers of the entire genre. I assume since it’s used soooooo much 3rd person player control over the should camera is also my favorite type of way to play a game as most people. But did we HAVE to kill games with fixed backgrounds and tank controls for one example to have the other?

I feel like I'm playing tank in every modern RPG. Just build the main character up to survive enemy attacks and set up the rest of the party to dps/heal and chip down whatever it is I'm attacking. Rinse, repeat.

A lot of this has to do with interesting (at least to me as a linguist lol) linguist direction the term rpg ended up at if we consider it’s roots say the creation of D&D to today as the timeline. It went from nerd shite to the most mass appeal way to market a video game in that timeframe. But I digress, my point is it’s made all the much worse by what I tend to call Witcher 3 demakes. Games like Assasin Creed Oddesey and Valahalla and all the others. They’re I guess mediocre at best as video games but they’re absolutely not RPGs lol.

Former Ubisoft devs are making this Expedition 33 game. They must agree.

Yeah did you see the quote from their ceo I put in the thread? They basically said that exactly outline about what we are bitching about. I see the final fantasy part of its inspiration but not the persona at all which is the second one he claimed. My guess is since the game obvious has a time element to it in story and structure they’re using some time of atlus calendar style system

As much as I love the Mass Effect series, the success of the COD-lite formats of ME2 and ME3 were horrible steps in that direction.

Yup. And Witcher 3 was its death blow, which in a weird turn W3 like 6-7 years later would again come out with the best 3rd person RPG camera function with its ps5 update.

I’m not sure if TW3 is a great example. It had a protagonist that had been defined through like six books and two games already. Giving the player leave to do whatever they want just wouldn’t really fit.

I get your meaning. I was mostly following on my comments lamenting on my opinion tw3 success and its ill spawned demakes is a big part of why we are in this situation. Imo ofc

Looks amazing. Unfortunately, the trend towards Perfect Parry and dodge combat is leaving us old time gamers behind. Sadly the reflexes ain't what they used to be. You guys enjoy.
