What an amazing game. It was my GOAT forever and is easily in my top 5.
Magus is such an awesome character. That was my dude in the early teen years. Dark Matter son.

If you enjoy Chrono Trigger, you should look into I Am Setsuna (PC and PS4). It's modeled a lot after CT and a throwback to old school JRPGs.
Noted. Thanks for the tip.

Were I to pick a favorite character, it would be the frog *name redacted for spoilers*.
Tons of moving back stories.
I failed with Lucca's mom on so many play throughs.

Square opened up a new studio with the sole purpose of making older styled RPGs. I hope you enjoy it.

Frog's story was amazing also.
I think 400AD was the best part of the game, if for nothing else Frog's theme and the overworld theme.
Sure wish we'd get Chrino Break....it'd do ridiculous sales. The Chrono nostalgia is strong.

Also to note the character designer was Akira Toriyama of DBZ fame. The character designs and the story and gameplay make this one of my favorite all time games.
Chrono Cross is great as well, I wish square would crawl out of their own arse and revive this series.

Coming from someone who has never played it before, what would be the ideal console or handheld to purchase it for?
Ideally, play it on a SNES or SNES emulator. The playstation version added FMV videos, but has terrible load times.
If nintendo has it on a VC that's probably a good way to go as well.

We need a true sequel.
Chrono Cross was a decent game, but the story was super confusing, iirc. I can remember bits of that story, but remember pretty much all of Trigger.
Need a game that maybe starts in the antiquity era of Zeal? Do a whole magical timecop?
Or maybe start in the Proto Dome, find a time machine and try to change the past yourself. . .to disastrous result?
Chrono Cross' story felt more like FFVIII and FFIX, where at the end you are scratching your head, going "uhhhh, well alright."

Every character was kind of amazing. Frog is clearly the best, Magus was great, Robo's story had a nice dose of sadness that worked.

Chrono Cross had IMO the best score of any game ever, so there's that. I'm also an enormous sucker for tropical locales. There were some great characters and the game play was fun (could have used way more double/triple techs).
But yeah, that story. Yeesh.
I really want to see them do the next game. I mean the story and protagonist write themselves (Schala looking for Serge, Magus looking for Schala across worlds).

Guess I have to be the contrarian here and say that this game was Meh
Tried to like it, tried to enjoy it, but I thought it was just average
On the flipside, I loved Earthbound and Super Mario RPG though.
I guess Chrono Trigger wasn't my style.

First of all yes, this game is in my top 10 JRPG for sure.
The DS version is the best. It has all the added features of the playstation port without the issues. It also has an updated more accurate translation.
The SNES version is still really good, and some will argue it is the best because of nostalgia of the original translation.
You can't go wrong with either. Just stay away from the playstation one. As the loading times are pretty bad if you have ever played the other versions.

600 AD theme, "wind scene", is such a good track.

Chrono Cross looked awesome and had an amazing soundtrack. The main reason I did not like it as much is because you have 9,000 characters to pick from. When an RPG has a ton of characters, you fail to get "attached" to them.
I really wasn't a big fan of the battle system either. I beat the game without fully understanding how to manipulate the elements/field, which probably made it more difficult for me.

Okay game. I beat it last week. Please don't expect anything remotely close to as good as Chrono Trigger.

No problem there. I've never played Chrono Trigger.
I was going to, but I don't have the classic Wii remote and I can't play it with the Wii U game pad.
