11 year old’s bday coming up. He wants a computer for gaming. He doesn’t play any games that really require a lot of power. Basically a normal CPU with a cool case that lights up, etc. What should be the minimum specs on something like this?

Sounds like he doesn't need a high end video card or a ton of RAM.

Something like this would probably work, though I cannot say if CyberPower is a quality brand or not:

Would prefer to keep it under $500 but if there isn’t anything worth that is go a little higher

You're looking at a refurb at that price range.

This is the best I could find

Still over 500 tho.

Is a Steam Deck something that would fall in the “cool enough” spectrum? Feel like the portability would really appeal to an 11yo, unless he’s specified that he wants a PC or laptop.

Get him a 410 instead or maybe some football gear

He’ll thank you later when he doesn’t grow up to be an “adult gamer”

i dont know much about iapson but the rig seems solid. If you can consider going over your 500 budget this would last him a long time and play what ever he wants to grow into.

Gotcha. I've never had one before so had no opinion on quality.

Not talking about cyberpower, I'm talking about those components.

Jawa.gg

Something like this?

This site has been useful to me in the past. It's a smaller marketplace of pc builders thats almost like a facebook marketplace. You can usually find a good deal on here. I bought my PC here 2 years ago and had a great experience with no issues. You can check their build components against a PC part builder site to see if it's cheaper to buy pre-made from them, or build yourself.

I got this laptop recently.
Comes with a $200 rebate so it’s like $700.

Your best bet at that price is a refurbished one.

Something like this:

Amazon refurbished PC

It will play most games, but not at the highest settings. Older games can be played with higher settings.

You'd need to buy a monitor, and there are others with more options for higher prices if you look for similar ones. This one has a smaller HD, but it's SSD.

Here's one for $500 without a monitor that's not refurbished. What sucks about it is that the graphics card isn't separate. I personally wouldn't buy it for that reason, but if you don't ever plan on upgrading it etc, it's not a bad deal.

$500
