I've found that upgrading garrison and upgrading talent is a big deal. Trying to get everybody 30,000 at least. The 70,000 mark is tough to hit.

I'm finding out that I upgraded too much shite
my hero bases are lvl 14 and the range is too good
the heroes will jump out of the walls solo and get destroyed

Get your towers to level 7 and you should be fine. The towers help a ton

My hero bases are 10
My camps are 7
My Town Hall is 8
My storages/containers all 8
That's as far as I upgraded although I'm going to need to upgrade soon in order to lvl my hero's over 100 since I can only hold 260,000 gold/elixir

Consider just starting at the end of the ranking list and attacking everyone you can as you move up. It is easy and you can get cash quick. I do that for the 10 gem bonus x2. I am sitting on full storages, get attacked once, then get a long break. I usually stay full that way. Sometimes it takes awhile, other times it goes really quick. It's very repeatable since your heroes never die.

Know too that the ranking lists change at 11 PM central. All of the deleted smurf accounts for the day come off at that point so it is easier to scroll through. It can take awhile at times when you have to scroll through a bunch. Usually you will get more elixer than gold. It's also much faster if you have no troops, just heroes, drop them all and let them go. Once you get most of the loot and are over 50% exit out and go to the next. After a few hundred pages in, there will be multiple targets to attack per page. I usually back out when the target has less than 1000 gold, sometimes 2000 gold.
This works best when you can play while doing something else, like watching tv, or your kids, or listening to your wife talk.
