-Turn in/pick up missions.
-Browse the vending machines.
-Upgrade a few SDU's.
-Tip Moxxi $1,000.
-At least $1-2,000 on the slots.
-Stare at the golden chest and hope I don't pull a Fool.

I agree with him that they should at least give you a "are you sure you want to use a key" prompt, but still no excuse.

The golden chest is worth it when you do it. I did it at level 24 and got an epic rocket launcher.
