Are there still simple, easy to download, free multiplayer first person shooters online?

Growing up we had Rainbow Six, Counterstrike, and my personal favorite Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Wolfenstein specifically I used to play, you could level up, keep your stats, play different servers with different specialties, all for free, it was amazing.

Does anything like that exist anymore? I actually tried to download Wolfenstein: enemy territory, about a year ago, and every server was just full of bots, I guess the game is pretty much dead now.

Anyway, just curious if stuff like that still existed or if you had to pay for everything nowadays

This thread reminded me of America's Army, a free FPS the army sponsored in early 2000's. I spent a couple of years of my life in that game, played in a couple of competitive clans. I could still probably draw out all the maps and camping spots. I remember on the middle eastern maps, remembering where to aim in the mountains in the bkrd to get 203 round's through specific windows from across the map.

Good times. I just pulled up an article that says that game series costed taxpayers 40 million, so thanks guys.

Absolute drop in the bucket in terms of cost for the US Military.

Was my personal favorite online shooter experience. And I was somewhat in the competitive space there with a pretty consistent group. Could mop up in that game.

I liked it more than TF2, honestly. But those were my two games for a decade.

Only thing I remember from AA was that VIP office map that was chaos. Had a lot of fun there

Same, I was in one of the better clans and given admin privileges on their server and stuff. I could rack up 100 kills in a 30 minute game pretty easily and used to get accused of cheating pretty regularly.

It’s funny because I feel like I suck at every other shooter

I do not know why but my mind went straight to Socom. Not a first person shooter but maybe came out around the same time?

My first FOS was AA2 played it for two or so years. Ran pretty decent on the family desktop considering it wasn’t anything close to a gaming rig

If a remastered AA2 came out tomorrow I’d buy it instantly.

My drug of choice for the last 2 years has been Valorant. It's a tactical shooter with gunplay similar to CS:GO and agents/heroes w/ abilities similar to Overwatch.

Here's an article describing the different roles of the Agents.

2023 Video Review if you'd rather watch than read.

....

I also saw someone mention Shatterline. I've played this one a good bit over the last year when I need a palate cleanser from Valo. It's a F2P FPS that mimics CoD's gunplay, but mixes it with Overwatch's hero/agent mechanics and game modes.

I think it's a fricking blast. I love it, but last time I played there was no Ranked Mode and I'm the kind of gamer that needs to chase the high of getting a new shiny rank in order to be really sucked in to a game.

Here's a recent video review for you.

Started playing cs 1.6 a few years ago after taking almost 20 years off. Found a server that has great gameplay and admins. Dust 2 for life!
