Are pure strategy games still being made?

In the 90s we had games like Simcity, Simtower, Swat, Civilization, Flight Simulator, Age of Empires, etc. Games that were more of a slower paced strategy.

Today it seems like games are more centered around action with quick and frequent payoffs, with cinematics playing a bigger role.

Not to say one is better than the other, but I do miss the slower paced strategy games of the 90s.

Are these still being made at all?

Yes, all the time. They’re bigger now than ever!

Paradox Interactice Studios is the current king of strategy IMHO. Very complicated strategy that emphasizes learning.

A new Civilization was released very recently.it was fun.

They’re making a new Agenof Empires game.

You mention SimCity. Cities skyline is a wonderful modern city builder.

All of those are pure gameplay

They just made a new civilization that was ok, but I much preferred Civilization 5. and the remastered Age of Empires 2 is amazing. Seriously it has new playable factions and new campaigns. Check it out.

You should also pick up City Skylines. It's awesome. I have over a thousand hours on it in Steam.

Im interested to see the suggestions in this thread.

Also, if you've never played them, check out Star Craft and Kerbal Space Program.

Star Craft is an obnoxiously fun game. It's much more fun by yourself unless you want to memorize and map a strategy and then spend time perfecting it.

If you play online you need friends that know what they're doing and you have to have a build order memorized and perfectly executed or you'll get destroyed.

Thanks you two for the recommendations.

I've heard of Skylines and seen mixed reviews between that and Cities XL. It's hard to judge from some reviews because some people just aren't used to a game like that.

If Skylines is closer to the Simcity feel then I'd go with that.

Kerbal actually looks really cool. Sandbox games are great.

Get you some Paradox.

Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, and Crusader Kings are all solid and popular.

I’ve got over 250 hours in each Kerbal and Cities:Skyline. If you don’t cheat, Kerbal becomes quite tough after a while.

Wait for a big Steam sale, then pick up Crusader Kings II and all/most of the DLC and then let it chew you up and spit you out.

I’ve been really interested in getting Kerbal Space Program. What exactly is it all about? Do you just build a ship and fly it?

It’s pretty unanimous that Cities Skylines is much better than cities in motion.

You have missions to accomplish, but, yeah, it's mostly about building different types of crafts and exploring the kerbal solar system. The different planets give different challenges determined by their distance, orbit and specifics, like gravity and atmosphere.

Should be one near the end of the month.

My problem with a lot of today's strategy games is that they are too freaking complicated. I love strategy games, but I don't want to have to spend hours to learn wtf I am doing.

Banished might be my favorite strat game right now. I tried to jump into crusader kings 2 but holy frick that ain’t no joke of a game.

Banished is a city builder/resource management sim. Basically you start out with a few villagers and you have to make a thriving community. Easy to learn, stupid hard to master.

How the heck do we include FLIGHT SIMULATOR in a thread about "pure strategy" games?

Flight Simulator was not so much strategy, more of a sandbox game where there's no little payoffs, you had to make your own fun.

Same concept as Simcity, just executed differently.

It's a sandbox game to explore the galaxy. It's more than just flying a ship because you can build bases on moons and planets, you can build landers and rovers and mine for fuel and all kinds of shite.

If you want to just fly around a glaxay in a cool ship then get Elite Dangerous.

And CK2 is relatively simple compared to Victoria 2.

They are still being made but you have to know where to look.

2K Games has the X-Com series and the Sid Meier stuff.

Stardock did the Galactic Civilization series which is like Master Of Orion getting a modern sequel which doesn’t suck.

Games Workshop has licensed out some of their board games like Space Hulk and Blood Bowl as turn based strategy as well.

If you have a Nintendo platform, consider the Fire Emblem series.

“96 percent chance to hit” from 1 square away. Misses. Then promptly gets one shot.

So, I think this thread started off weird...

There's no such thing as pure strategy...strategy is a style that can be the launching point of a game.

Turn-based strategy
Realtime strategy
etc.

And yes, there are always these games.
