You have never played XI or XIV have you...?
I understand that XIV is an MMO, and not a stand alone. . .but after XIII, frick those guys.

XIII was the biggest abomination of any game ever created. P.S: I created an ETA to that post, and you should seriously try out XIV once 2.0 is release.
On this board and on the m/t board you seem to have very similar interest to what I like.. I think you would really enjoy it. Yoshi-P the guy behind XIV now, isn't a "SquareSoft" guy.. I believe he was brought in after the merger, but might actually be an Enix guy, and knows how to make fun games.. unlike the abomination that was XIII. (I wont touch another SquareEnix game because of that game too FWIW)

I wholeheartedly agree. SE has a lot to prove to me before I put any effort into one of their single player renditions.

I might try it sometime. . . I'm into SWTOR, atm.
If they don't expand some, I'm dropping that game.

Once 2.0 software is released for download for PC players in September or October, the game will go back to temporary free-to-play mode. They will resume payments after 2.0 hits retail a few months later.
Other than that, get the game for CHEAP ($10 from Amazon's digital download), and enjoy your month of free play time.

The "free trial" isn't coming til 2.0.
You do get a free month with purchase and the game is only like $20 right now though.
ALERT: If you decide to try this game out, please come to the server WUTAI . My toon's name is Andvari Bjarki

I actually beta tested SWTOR and have an unopened copy of it sitting on my shelf.. I thought the game was much much more fun than WoW, but after playing such a deep game like XI it's really hard to play the fast paced Western MMOs.

My point is if you're looking for a different MMO experience, try it out. Just know going in you're playing a prequel of sorts to the release of FFXIV 2.0.
But it's safe to play now? Still fun?

You guys got me pumped about playing it now. I miss FFXI.
Coming home from the bars and joining up with a full party of Japanese players, then passing out and waking up at 7am seeing my toon at that revive crystal... good times

I love the amount of One-star reviews on Amazon's page for XIV from 2010. >.>
Also, what is the state of SWTOR? How is it holding up after release?

The e3 show they are bringing this year is suppose to do exactly this for people that aren't like you and don't have people around them that play it now.
They really are going to try to bring the XI community over while showing everyone else that the game isn't broken anymore.

Might do that soon. I need a filler before Guild Wars 2.

I'm having fun. Safe to play though? Like any good MMO, it'll still suck your life away. ;)
Just remember, the name of the game now is change.

To really have the breadth of an "open world" game, you have to do so much more than they can do right now.
Most people don't want a true open world game.
As far as AI and scripting, I am curious as to what you have in mind. If you do a ton of AI and scripting, you really don't have an open world game anymore.

I can't believe you're going to pay for Final Fantasy XIV rather than SWTOR.
The only two people on this board who like FFXIV (BaddestAndvari and the alien guy) are partly vindicated by the fact that the game has made vast improvements since release. I'd say that it's gone from about a 2/10 to a 5/10, though. The "leve" system is still empty and boring, like the combat. You stand there and autoattack until your "TP" reaches a high enough level to use a special attack that does more damage. That's right - most of your leveling experience consists of attacking an enemy and then waiting to press another key. The world also feels lifeless and samey compared to other Square Enix creations, especially Final Fantasy XI. It's like they copied and pasted the entire world and gave everything different names. This would be fine if there were any sort of continuity between Final Fantasy universes, but there rarely is when you discount guys named Cid, Chocobos, moogles, and Cactuars.
I haven't yet and still won't recommend that you purchase SWTOR just because it probably isn't your bag if you're tired of that style of MMO, but I will recommend that you not waste your money on a still half-broken piece of junk like FFXIV.
My friend plays it all the time and forces me to try it every few months just to see what has changed, and I still can't find much redeemable about it. It looks nice and it has virtually no learning curve - there, some positives to distinguish this from a JerseyTiger post.

WoW will remain king until Blizzard itself develops its own new mmorpg. This should happen in 2014 and is tentativly called "Titan".

You let this thread get to page 4 of us talking good about XIV, you're slipping Muppet!
I haven't been playing this game since release, remember I just bought it in January. I truly feel like this game is the best thing to come around since I played XI for the first time just after the North American release. (my first MMO experience) Just my opinion though, I really don't like "twitchy" games, but we've talked about that before.

Point taken. And I know, I'm STILL on the fence about TOR. If ANet would come out and say Guild Wars in 2013! I would consider it. I'm looking at the cost of a "filler" though in hopes that I like it. I'd play SWTOR....if it cost me somewhere around $9.99 or $19.99. $50 for a game that I I'm not sure if it will engage me or not (I don't consider my 10 hours in the beta enough), is just too much.

realistically, though, I doubt Project Titan will actually hit shelves in 2014.
