I understand the banner system
The banner system is strange.
They leave out, total kills, k/d, wins, win%
but have top 3, Legend kill totals, total wins with full squad.
I just put something dumb on my banner.

I agree but at least the badges for individual characters let you know if you won like 1/5/15/25/100 times. Better than nothing

They have total kills, unless you are meaning total kills across all characters.
I get having character specific stats so you can see how well someone plays that character. I do agree though that there should be something that shows your overall stats as well.

I am talking about total kills for the entire account. Not having that sort of encourages people to only play one.

Do packs give any competitive advantage or is it just skins and shite?

Do not buy them. No advantage and the cost to cosmetic is a joke.

The packs aren't bad. Yes it is purely cosmetic so what value you put to cosmetic items will shift that but $1 per pack isn't obscene. For a free game, that's not a big deal.
The prices for any actual item is stupid though. They are like 11.50 or something and you can only buy coins in packs of 10. I agree that is dumb. The apex packs though isn't an insane price.

Datamine Leaks - modes, new legends
quote:
@RealApexLeaks found references to a very interesting new mode. Simply referred to as Survival in the in-game files, the mode appears to feature spectator and commentator NPCs who will cheer players on, and even perform a few emotes of their own.
It’s not yet clear how this particular mode is going to play out, or even if these exciting features will end up making it into the final version, but there’s something interesting there you don’t find in other battle royale games.
In relation to the same mode, RealApexLeaks also found references to a replay system. This appears to be a simple kill replay like what you might see in Call of Duty, or Titanfall. As it stands, Apex Legends does not offer a kill replay system of any kind, though you’re free to spectate remaining players after dying.
Speaking of new modes, @ApexUpdate found entries in the game’s code that mention solo, and duos modes. Apex Legends does not currently have any modes other than three-player squads, but solo and duos were among the first requests players made.
Respawn already promised new characters in the game’s year one roadmap, and according to new leaks, some of their abilities may have been exposed ahead of time.
RealApexLeaks found entries for at least two upcoming heroes. The first, called Octane, appears to have some sort of stim injection, but the description doesn’t mention what it actually does. Likewise, another is called Wattson, and his ability is a deployable Tesla Trap.

The packs are terrible as well. The chances of getting anything worthwhile are extremely low. It is a free game, so I am not bitching about them. But don't buy.

Why can't companies realize they'd make a shite ton more money if they just offer buyable skins and not this gamble bullshite?

I wouldn't even mind the gambling if every skin was decent. They have like 500 of recolor skins, banner counters, banner designs etc. And a handful of worthwhile skins. The decent skins have a terrible drop rate. 1/30 guaranteed drop of a legendary, but that legendary may be a banner or a banner pose.
The game is great, it's okay if somebody wants to support them but the packs are in no way worth it.

That’s why I’m not ready to crown this game the next big thing yet. It’s off to a great start but it’s still an EA game

No, loot crates shouldn't be in any video game since it's 100% gambling and takes advantage of people (kids and teens) that don't know any better

quote:That's not a bad drop rate at all for the nicest stuff in lootboxes. Rocket League's Black Market stuff is a 1% chance. I'm fine with the lootbox system in Apex. You get them for free for leveling up and they don't require keys to open. The loot distribution is reasonable and you can also open currency that allows you to just outright choose what skin you want eventually. Closely resembles Overwatch's system which I consider one of the better micro-transaction setups.

PUBGs rarest item in their new crate is 0.16%

It's not at that rate though. Because legendaries can be banners, banner poses, executions etc. Not just camos or skins. And that rate adds up to 30 dollars.

They gate you into thinking that. You get a crate every level until level 20, then 1 every 2 levels until 50. Then one every 5 levels until 100. Then none. So you can earn 45, that is all.

Sure, after opening 60 plus crates you may have enough crafting material to unlock a Legendary. They cost around 1250. I myself have opened around 80 and have yet to get enough materials. I am very close, but I spent my 60 dollars on the game and I am done. Only have 10 free packs left to earn. 60 dollars and have not received one thing I like. The game is worth that price though.

To preface this, I am a 24 year old college graduate with a bachelors degree from a 4 year university. I have a full-time job, a long term girlfriend, and have my life together for the most part. This is merely to show that this can happen to anyone, not just young kids and those not educated on the predatory nature of loot boxes in games.
I’ve played video games my whole life, I’ve seen all the micro transaction tactics before, including loot boxes. I’ve put hours into Overwatch and Rocket League, two games notorious for their loot box system.
However, these games didn’t tempt me into ludicrous spending. In my many hours in both games I probably spent less than $30 total. I’ve never had much luck when it comes to loot boxes and despite wanting the items inside, I knew the math behind it and wasn’t going to throw my money around chasing the carrot on a stick.
Along with this, I’ve never bought scratch offs, lottery tickets, etc. I knew the odds and thought my money was better spent elsewhere.
So why was this time different? The answer was the elusive Wraith heirlooms.
Yesterday I began my journey into the rabbit hole that is chasing after the heirloom items, something that has a <1% chance of dropping.
Why did I do this after everything I just wrote, knowing the math behind these loot boxes?
What got me with Apex Crates was the guaranteed “pity timer”. If you open 500 crates you are guaranteed a heirloom bundle. To top it off, the only heirlooms in the game right now are for Wraith (my main) and I wanted to secure them before new ones dropped, lowering my chance to ever luck out and receive them.
At least 3 of my friends have gotten the Wraith heirlooms in only a few crates, all the streamers have them, surely it wouldn’t take me the whole 500 crates right?
Wrong. I bought bundle of coins after bundle. Each time thinking to myself, “The heirlooms will come this set of packs”. I knew from the very first crate that I would be entering into a serious sunk cost fallacy but I still couldn’t stop. I opened up crates until I reached #500, the guaranteed Wraith heirlooms.
I can tell you it wasn’t worth it. I now own every single blue rarity item in the game, along with countless legendaries for almost every gun and legend in the game, none of which I really care for or wanted. All in the hunt for a set of items that has a less than 1 percent chance of dropping.
Feel free to roast me, I deserve it. I’ve already roasted myself plenty. I just hope this story will resonate with some people and maybe help prevent someone from doing the same thing I did. I can provide proof of my purchases if necessary.
TL;DR: I spent $500 opening 500 Apex Crates In search of the Wraith heirlooms. I got them on my 500th crate. Don’t be like me.
