Just sounding out the board. I did a search but couldn't find any threads.

Pic is not me, but I’m going through a game as UK vs my brother as Germany. He’s a fan of deposing hitler and going with a Kaiser. I’m expecting him to mount a serious Battle of Britain and assault me in at least 1940.

I couldn't really get into Hearts of Iron 4. But I have had a great time playing Hearts of Iron 2.

Usually as Australia.

I know. Odd choice.

But they have decent leaders. Great tech. And no one every comes down to invade them. You can beat up on the Italians in North Africa, save Malaysia in South East Asia, and fight a carrier battle against Japan in the same game.

I play it when I actually have a computer mouse.

Italy is a very underrated country to play

If you like this, you might want to try Steel division. It's more real-time strategy but these games go hand in hand very nicely. Also produced by Paradox.

I would still say CK2, EU4, and Stellaris at better due to HOI not really fitting my preferred play style honestly.

Can't wait for Imperator

Italy is one of my favorites actually. You start with a decent enough navy/airforce that if you focus, you can drive the UK from the Med after a few years if you can manage to take the suez and the rock.

We did the first few hours of our game last night. I went demo as the UK (never done that before) and he tried to rush the sudentenland in early 37. I decided I'd take a stand and stood by the Czechs. France and CZ joined the allies immediately and he clearly wasn't ready to take us on.

Within a year, he'd added italy to the Axis, but I managed to add Poland to the allies. It's mid 38 and he looks pretty fricked already unless the Russians declare war on the poles

For context, we never play with ai historical focuses.

I did for a while and moved on to other games. Tried downloading it again this week, but the game just freezes on load.

Don’t click the mouse while it’s loading. It should load up.

Germans...

Just kidding. I tried HoI 3, and couldn't get into it. I'm a big Paradox fan and play CK2, EU4, Victoria 2, and Stellaris regularly. Would you say HoI 4 is an upgrade to 3? To be honest, I was mostly overwhelmed with the detail of management options available in HoI 3.

These games are always interesting, but I tend to struggle with them. Combination of me not wanting to take the time to learn the small things + how slow things move.

Fair

What is your most common starting point (character, location, and date) and how do you generally "lose"?

Do you get overtaken by someone in your own religious/culture group/nation? Outside invaders? Revolt? Lose all of your territory in succession crises? Etc?

Only way I learned how to play was by watching hours of YT videos. And I'm still trash

I'm gonna play some HOI4 later as Norway, go fascist, and unite Scandinavia
