A new report has claimed that longtime Halo developer 343 Industries is being taken off of "active development" of the franchise and that new games in the series will be created by third-party studios.

A follow-up to Halo Infinite is also expected to enter pre-production alongside spin-off titles, with these games reportedly being franchised out to other studios and being developed on more modest budgets.

343 and Microsoft's handling of the Halo franchise has been an absolute childhood-ruining travesty.

This is bittersweet news

On one hand, 343 has been awful and weakened the Halo brand

On the other, I'm still enjoying Infinite and hope this doesn't kill Halo as a whole

No way Microsoft lets Halo die. It’s their Mario. Here’s to better games down the line

What was the issue with the MCC? I remember it being received relatively well.

It was quite literally unplayable for a full year+.

Many regard it as the worst launch of all time.

I remembered playing it immediately and without issue, which got me very confused, so I started looking up dates.

In my head, the MCC was the name of the PC release of the collection in late 2019. I had forgotten it was released under the same name for Xbox in 2014, which is the release you guys are describing:

I feel like any fledgling video game designer straight out of video game design school should be able to make a competent FPS.

They perfected the genre with the release of Doom in 1993. The fact that so few Halo titles have been released (and the ones that have being plagued with issues) shows that 343 is a studio with a lot of organizational problems that's probably just a shitty place to work.

Give Halo to Id or Machine Games since Microsoft owns them now.

Could never find games, constant down servers, slow/glitchy gameplay, games would crash after starting. Etc etc

A few posts later, I clarified that I was confused as I was referring to the PC release, forgetting about the troubled XBox release several years earlier

not so fast, my friend

quote:

343 Industries' studio head, Pierre Hintz, has issued a statement confirming the studio's commitment to the Halo franchise and stating that "343 Industries will continue to develop Halo now and in the future".

"Halo and Master Chief are here to stay," Hintz said in the brief statement.

"343 Industries will continue to develop Halo now and in the future, including epic stories, multiplayer, and more of what makes Halo great."

quote:

The statement follows reports that the studio was hit hard by Microsoft's latest round of layoffs, prompting rumors that 343 Industries will apparently soon be ceasing active game development and franchising the Halo license to other studios after Halo Infinite allegedly failed to meet its financial expectations. The single-player DLC planned for Halo Infinite has also reportedly been scrapped.

quote:

"The layoffs at 343 shouldn't have happened, and Halo Infinite should be in a better state," one former 343i developer said (opens in new tab)at the time on Twitter. "The reason for both of those things is incompetent leadership up top during Halo Infinite development causing massive stress on those working hard to make Halo the best it can be."

While Halo Infinite was critically successful(opens in new tab) at launch, its sporadic and delayed content updates have left fans frustrated. Since then, there have been several high profile exits, including 343 Industries founder Bonnie Ross, who left the studio after 15 years(opens in new tab).
