State of the server update:
As I meantioned in the MOTD, there seems to be problems with minecarts. You can build and place them fine, but my log dumps explode with errors (as well as obvious glitching on your client) should you attempt to ride them.
I have not tested them hauling cargo but for the momment consider them broken. I have not removed the crafting recipes for them in the game, but if it turns out that they can't even haul/can't fix it on my end. I'll be forced to deactiveate them.
How do you guys feel about putting depth into communication functionality?
Right now we have emotes, global chat, and PM capability.
I can easily alter the nature of default chat to being local only, that is only players within 35 blocks of your present location can 'hear' you. A global command would still be available via "shout."
Also, I can add the ability to create and move between chat channels. You would be able to 'hear' whatever between all of the channels you have joined, but you would only speak to whatever channel you are in at that momment.
Right now there is only the ability to send a message to a single player, and to speak to the
server.
These things seemed a little overdone for how we are using the server so I wanted some input before implementing the changes.

I can only seem to connect for a few seconds before minecraft crashes...
My laptop is a POS. I may try my old laptop tomorrow(which actually has much better specs than my new laptop but is 6 times heavier)

That happens to me occasionally, but if I close the client and try again I usually get in.

Chat channels, at this time, shouldn't be needed. Most I've seen on at once is 5 and the chat was far from being flooded to the point of needing to separate it. PMs can be used for that if needed at this time, in my opinion.
I'll see if I can find any information on the mine carts glitching (and not being able to place water springs myself unless I have that special one) today.
eta: Looks like they are "known bugs" with SMP at this time.

Someone mentioned that using Llamacraft fixed the water issue, but I have no idea what all that would change or anything like that. I haven't been able to find any posts on the same cart issue we're having.

I get disconnected after about a minute.

Try setting your render distance to short or tiny and see if that stops the disconnection. I think host is away currently, so if it's a name issue he can fix it upon returning.

It shouldn't be a name issue.
As of now the server is completely unrestricted, anyone with the Alpha client and the IP I gave in the OP can log in.

I'm waiting on cox to come fix my Internet, but I'll try to log on in the next few days. Something else to consider might be a teamspeak or ventrilo server if enough people are on at a time. Jackbauershnk is my game name.

you guys should check out my underwater farm, pretty cool concept. i saw one like it on youtube and wanted to try it.
i would love to build a sort of channel system to get to and from each other's buildings and caves.
