I really enjoy craft brews but understand the business side of this question.

You cant let your own personal tastes and ego get in the way of sound business decisions.

In this marketplace you will need to have a few macro brews on tap. For every person that comes into you establishment to get a micro you will have 3 or more that want to drink a traditonal macro brew. You have to cater to what your customer base wants.

I have seen many people who wont get a beer or a second (women in particular) if a macro isnt available.

You would probably need 2 to 4 macros on tap and a couple beers like blue moon or dos equis and then the rest are crafts with maybe a rotational tap.

You may be able to get away with it in the Pacific Northwest or Colorado but dont think you could in the gulf coast.

You may not be aware, but that's illegal.

Found this with a couple of clicks through google.

LA ATC Regulated Business Practices

quote:

Exclusive outlet and tied house arrangements are unfair inducements to purchase goods or services by wholesalers or retailers, and it is unlawful for any person engaged in business as a distiller, brewer, rectifier, blender, manufacturer, or other producer, or as an importer or wholesaler of distilled spirits, wine, malt beverages or malt liquors, directly or indirectly or through an affiliate, to have exclusive outlet or tied house arrangements.

quote:

Tied House—when any retail dealer engaged in the sale of distilled spirits, wine, malt beverages, or malt liquors is induced to purchase any such products from such person to the exclusion in whole or in part of distilled spirits, wine, malt beverages, or malt liquors sold or offered for sale by other persons through any of the following means:

...c. by furnishing, giving, renting, lending, or selling to the retail dealer, any equipment, fixtures, signs, supplies, money, services, or other thing of value...

if I was to open a bar, I would try to separate myself from every other bar in the city. I would offer the best beer that I could possibly get.

if you're just going to have the same beers as every bar in the city, what makes your bar different from the others?

This.

You could do a LOT with 11 taps... why be ordinary?

Yeah it's pretty common practice. It's not a contract or official, there's a wink and a nod, goes on every day.

Yeah but if we have all 11 filled up with micro and don't fetch a micro crowd we are screwed.

Plus you beer snobs are kinda weird, and I don't want y'all to represent my entire clientele. That would spell disaster for my business.

To go into more detail with the question, it's for a bar with daiquiri machines that's adding a full food menu.

It's a real place. There will be bud light, colors light, miller light, and ultra. One tap will be a St Arnold beer because they paid for parts. We will use Tin Roof on at least one tap.

ypou dont need more taps for the style of place and the clientele that you are trying to bring in the doors

add Shiner Bock and call it a day

best of luck

You can still appeal to a lot of people with Tin Roof Blonde, Canebrake, and Abita Amber.

and it seems like the Yats are just NOLA fan boys because I wasn't blown away.

Ok, you are losing it now.

NOLA is putting out some great beer.

Good luck with your situation. Trying to have good beers and mix in with a daquirie shop is going to be tough.

Lots of people have given you good advice in this thread of what some good beers will be, but it sounds like you need to make a business decision.

Wow. So a TX brewery bribing an LA bar to carry its beer. And the LA bar happily going along.

Someone please kick me in the nuts if I ever accidentally patronize this place.

That changes it. The daiquiri crowd is big on BMC. Just throw in some local stuff. Canebrake, Tin Roof pale ale, NOLA Hopitoulas and the like. You'll be surprised how much Canebrake you'll blow through.

Thanks rouge, the keg system is set up. So we have to fill the taps. I think Jobes hit the nail on thead on page 1. I should have asked what is your favorite beer on tap.

Maybe I'll make another thread, the reason we added the draft is because we had the room and coolers do it. I'd like to have people come in to eat and get a couple pints instead of just a sammich to go.

So, any hints as to what this place is? Or where? I know you probably don't want to name it, but curious if it's on my side of town.

Truth is, you represent < 5% of the dining public in BR.

If your place is as hospitable as you are, I'm sure you'll do well.

You dont even think its a problem that you're breaking the law. I bet your standards for running this place will be top notch too.

Just stick to cheap beer and fruity frozen beverages and you'll get the kind of quality patrons you want. Keep it classy.
