I've actually talked about this to the lady behind the seafood counter at the Prairieville Winn Dixie. I was about to purchase what I assumed were fresh shrimp and she was straight up honest with me. She told me that a lot of the time they just open bags of the frozen "EZ Peel" shrimp that they sell in the frozen coolers.

That a pound of Chinese crawfish is $7 and Louisiana in $13.

Read the label, that package of Chinese crawfish are usually only 12 oz, that's actually $9.31 a lb..

I have no problem paying the difference, the quality gap is HUGE.

I always assumed this is what they were. Same with the ground meat just being pulled out of a huge pack and repackaged like it is fresh ground.

You'd be surprised how many seafood places pass of frozen foreign shrimp as fresh shrimp. It happens a lot. The quality of the shrimp really isn't that bad.

At most I would say they are assembled in the USA.

Excuse the highjack, but you should peruse the federal regulations specifying when something may be labelled "Made in the USA." I'm not exaggerating too much when I say it can be labelled that way if a person in the U.S. takes a Chinese made screw and screws it into a Japanese made product.

You can't really go by size. Imports will sometimes convert their shrimp to our count system and this can throw people off. You really have to look at the country of origin carefully to tell. By law, all retailers and grocery stores must notify you or advertise country of origin when selling fresh and frozen seafood. Advertisement can be small writing on frozen but for fresh it must be visible to let the consumer know. Problem is this law is not usually enforced.

Labeling Link by Dept. of Agriculture

If you do see a kilo count then that should tell you right there that it is foreign. Usual kilo counts are:

20-30 Kilo
30-40
40-50
50-60
60-70
etc.

Domestic head-on shrimp counts are usually:

U/10
9/12 or U/12
10/15
13/15 (texas count)
16/20
21/25
26/30
31/35
36/40
40/50
50/60
60/70
70/80
80/100

I'd believe you, read an article last year about how Italy's economy is being crushed by such tactics. Basically made in Italy isn't shite anymore and that is all they had to show fine craftsmanship around the world.

Not much of a choice when it comes to seafood. Wait until you can get away from campus and buy some quality stuff. You can get some good quality frozen from those places for your freezer to use when can't go get fresh.

Good place to get good shrimp and a good price.

I would also recommend in Baton Rouge:

Tony's
Randy Montalbano
LA Boilers
Tommy's Seafood
Heads N Tails
Cajun Seafood
Jimbo's

let me check around for it. luckily I have a job that allows hours of reading articles and it was one I came across.

basically was about how the thread/fabric gets made/dyed in Italy then shipped to China to make the clothing. Then that is marketed as Made in Italy. Had a vendor and how his material was aged in a basement for a year or so....

Let me look a little and I will get back.
