The old man wants to start making his own wine. He's retired and has too much time on his hands now. I want to buy him a nice wine bottle opener for Christmas. What style opener would y'all suggest. Thanks in advance

Classy but probably won't get it in time for Christmas unless you order asap:

Says it's temporarily out of stock on amazon. Macy's has it and looks like you could get it for Christmas if you order soon:

What’s the purpose of the wine opener? Over the years, no matter where I am, home, freinds, out, the wine opener is just a tool and usually basic. Waiters is used quite a bit.

All that other stuff sits in a closet, used once.

Step one don't refer to your dad as "old man"

See if you can order a waiters corkscrew from his favorite winery. If he has one.

Any other wine opener would be such an impersonal gift IMO

I agree with all of this. I almost always default to the simple waiter's friend when opening wine. The exception is when I have an older bottle, in which case I use a Durand. But Durand is really for old, fragile corks and it's expensive. Go with a nice waiter's friend style opener, either something from his favorite winery, or a nice one made out of a nice wood, like the stuff from Laguiole.

I've always been very partial to the waiters style. Classy, timeless, and efficient.

This might work well as long as she comes with it.

The only wine opener anyone should ever own is a well made two stage waiters corkscrew.

Anything else is a waste of money.

This is actually the exact model I have and the only one I ever use. I have quite a few fancier models, but never use them.

It takes 20 seconds once you get used to centering the cork. I’ve never understood why people think opening a bottle of wine is a difficult task.

I’ve owned several different types of “wine openers”, and a simple waiter’s wine key is all that I use now.
