While the limited number of covered cities is a legitimate critique, that’s hardly relevant to the fact that it’s probably the most objective, consistent rating system for haute cuisine in the areas it covers.

He literally told another chef “if I lose a star, I’ll kill myself.”

I've been to several starred places that failed to live up to expectations with the food just being good (Gary Danko in San Fran for me).

My experience there was great.

No they wouldn’t. Have you eaten at a Michellin star restaurant? Nothing against August or Commanders, but they're nowhere near that level.

He shot himself with his stars still there. And the restuarant still has them. He didn't shoot himself over a rumor.

Also, in the Michelin star world today. the guardian

Gault Millau had just downgraded it. The rumors got so bad Michelin had to release a statement to stop them.

Was it the only reason? Probably not. But when you’re in debt and fearing for the future of your restaurant then you get downgraded and rumors of another downgrade are swirling, it can be the push over the ledge.

I have eaten at Michelin stars and they aren’t far off.

A Michelin Star label really jades one’s perspective and judgement. You’re going to convince yourself it’s superior

I agree that they can have a "wine effect" to them sometimes.

And I think everyone agrees that August and Commander's could be in the running for a Michelin Star. 2 though? Getting to 2 and 3 stars is truly elite restaurants. I don't think either could get there.

One star, sure.

2 and definitely 3 are more like “plan a special trip around this place” kind of restaurants. Not “if you’re in this city, you have to go here” type places.

I’m talking one star

Abs really if the wanted to spend the $$ to get there they probably could. Mainly through staffing and training. They are already full most of the time so having Michelin attaches to their name doesn’t do anything for them

Not to be a dick, but you're not the first person here to eat at a Michellin starred restaurant. If a place like Longman and Eagle in Chicago earned a star, there are multiple places in New Orleans and the South in general that are worthy. Agreed that none in town would be 2 starred though.

Yup. While a Michelin Star is pretty special, there places all over the world with one star that I wouldn't necessarily call "elite". There's some pretty casual mom and pop places in Italy that would definitely strain that definition. Once you start talking multiple stars, that's another story.

Michelin doesn’t award stars to restaurants in cities for which they do not publish a red guide. Upgrading the experience at commanders wouldn’t matter since they don’t have a red guide for New Orleans.

Sukiyabashi jiro isn’t anything fancy when you walk in and it’s 3 Stars.

The more stars you get the more stuffy the place is. It’s fun to experience the the real fine dining places but it’s probably not something I’ll ever do again

Personally I love the level of fine dining that NOLA offers. I don’t need a Per Se or FL.

That's by nature though I'd say, not sure if you can get around it? Generally speaking it takes the absolute best and freshest ingredients to be up there. I mean no one is getting multiple stars using Sysco.

So in order to get the best and the freshest, they have to charge more which means fewer people.

That's why I've ALWAYS said its best to talk about the best single dishes. You can have the best of something outside of a 3 michelin star restaurant. They may just suck at everything else.

I ate at a single Michelin starred restaurant in Florence. It was out of this world good. I can only imagine what eating at a 3 Michelin star restaurant is like.
