Why did it take decades to develop the current cereal box lid lock?

It seems so easy that this would be the most effective way to close a cereal box, the tongue and groove overlap and tuck.

But for years and years it was the tongue and slit that never seemed to work, or took too much effort.

Why did it take so long?!

Seems like a zip lock kind of inner bag would also be fantastic.

I have had a conspiracy theory for years that the major cereal players have agreed that none of them would do that, which saves them all a penny or so per box that adds up to millions of $$$ over time.

The idea is obvious as hell, but they know that if one offers it they will only have an advantage for a few weeks until the others offer it too. Then they all have to pay for it with no more advantage.

It's sort of like the car dealers supporting the state law that says they must close on Sunday.

The can opener wasn't invented until 48 years after the can.

I can't open the cereal plastic bag without tearing the edge of the box, rendering the lid closure practically useless.

The plot goes much deeper twenty 49
Have you not noticed how much food packaging is designed to prevent consumer from effectively resealing any leftover unused portion once the packaging is opened ?

Cookies, potato chips, frozen foods, the list is long.
This is the food processors equivalent to planned obsolescence in cars!

Bunch of OT poors in here. I've been using Tupperware boxes for cereal since the 80s. Open the box, eat a bowl, dump the rest in the Tupperware. Seals it up fresh.

Lighten up Francis.

I don't eat it that much. But my kids will tear up a box of Apple Jacks. I think the Tupperware is older than I am.

Or cupholders in cars that were more than the 1/8 inch deep built into the inside of the glove compartment door. Had to buy one that clipped onto the door. Hit a pothole one day, boom drink everywhere. Yeah, was a bit late for school that day.
