Yes. It is better than the Barleywine, but still hot if you ask me. In a few years it will hit its prime.

Not if your going to sell it on the secondary market for a markup.

Listen, i get it. I get the attraction to van winkle. I, personally, would never pay for it. Same goes for any bottle of beer that is $65. I wouldn't spend that much money on it, however i get why people do it.

That's 2 different styles though. You've had the rare?

it was aged in 35 year old Heaven Hill barrels that they forgot about or just found or something

it will never be made again

so yeah...while a lot of it is marketing and hype, there is some "rareness" about it in that there probably won't be any other 35 year old barrels found anytime soon

It's also aged two years in the barrel instead of the standard one year for regular BCBS.

The 2010 batch of rare was aged in 23 year PWV barrels, which to me is more desirable than these forgotten about "undrinkable" bourbon barrels. Supposedly, the flavors were so unbalanced that they couldn't even blend it with other bourbon to make it palatable.

Oh I agree that it is definitely ridiculous, but guess what? people are falling all over themselves to buy it, so it seems to me that the price is fine

just maybe not to you or me

Or flip it for well-over that $$ amount in beer, which some dude is already trying to do on Facebook.

Yes. Just giving you a base for the taste.

It is the same as the regular BCBS just stronger bourbon flavor.

if you are interested in the story behind Rare, watch this

and if you have time, watch the entire doc, which I found to be quite interesting

Did a side-by-side with regular BCBS and the 2010 rare about a year ago. It wasn't blind, but there was really no comparison. Haven't tried the new batch of rare yet, so can't speak for that.

Flip bourbon or rare?

All the trading forums I've been on, I haven't seen the ability to get $4$ back for Rare. Maybe that's because I look at mostly hops trades but I'm not seeing anyone putting up $65 worth of Tree House, Trillium, HF, etc. for one bottle of Rare.

The prices for PVW are still reasonable in the bourbon world if selling for anywhere close to the MSRP. An extremely high quality product in limited production is of course going to garner secondary market value.

There are plenty of limited production bourbons in the $100-$250. Everybody just knows PVW

Yeah, you got to think that after that long, the bourbon will really start to breakdown and all that will be left is pure alcohol.

35 years, how does that not completely evaporate? I have a whiskey barrel that i used for beer, and in between batches, i bought 2 handles of albertsons brand whiskey to keep the barrel moist. Well, i forgot about it, and within 6 months, it completely evaporated.

ABOUT MY STOUT

I made a whiskey barrel stout about 3-4 years ago. Bought a 5 gallon used Balcones Whiskey barrel from a homebrew shop out of Texas. I made a 9% imperial stout, threw it in the barrel with 8 oz. of knob creek. Let it sit in the barrel for about a month before bottling. Let it sit in the bottle another month or 2 before drinking.

It wasn't bad actually. First few bottles were a bit harsh, but after time they got better. I did find that the beer did not carbonate (i was bottle carbing) but the taste was still great. Like drinking more of a bourbon than a beer. Fast forward to today, and i found 1 bottle left of that same stout, in the back of the beer fridge. Was thinking about drinking it around christmas. Or i'll sell it to someone here for $50.

What you put in has a lot more surface area to evaporate from than a full barrel.

Plus they are probably 55-gallon barrels, not 5... takes a long time (obviously) for that much whiskey to evaporate.

I'll trade you some barleywine I brewed in June 2013.

Flipping bourbon.

I know of a guy in New Orleans who got a case of Treehouse (~$96) for his Rare on a Facebook group. And he had multiple offers. HF may be harder, but I would think Treehouse and Trillium would be no problem. There are a lot of people out there with regular access to that stuff.

I posted in the FBD thread an example of someone going far beyond on just Tree House cans. Like most trades, it just depends on who is looking and how bad they want it. And the trade value likely isn't going to decrease. Each year that passes the beer will mellow and there will be less "in the wild."

I bought one, but not to trade. I have intentions of drinking it in a couple years. I initially blanched at the price tag, but it'll be a treat for me down the road.

That's what Yeezy was saying in the other forum. I haven't seen anything close to that since initial release, so maybe it's just the forums I'm on. Either way, it's a beer worth holding if anything

We should just do a bottle share.

I will say, that a buddy of mine puked violently an hour after drinking that beer. I drank it, i was fine, my brother had it, he was fine, so were my other friends, but one friend of mine got very ill. To this day he won't drink any homebrew i give him because he's afraid it will cause him to puke.
