Whole 30 is the best "diet plan" out there. In a land full of gimmicks, its one of the few with sustainability
Agreed.
People I know who have done it actually kept it going after the 30 days. Its not some fad diet that you will never stick with. It changes your overall philosophy of food in general.

I think everyone needs to watch the 'fed up' documentary. Sugar and processed foods with added sugar are what's killing our country. I knew it before but that documentary sealed it for me.
Diets like the whole 30 and even paleo largely seek out to remove those processed foods, and that is why they work so well,IMO.

I just started the Whole 30 yesterday. Feeling a little weak and tired but I know it will take a day or two to snap out of that. This has been a good thread. Any words of encouragement from someone who has completed it? I know it will be difficult but I read on their website something that stuck. Something like, fighting cancer is hard, losing a parent is hard, eating a good diet is not hard. Corny but got me thinking.

I was done as of the end of last month. I think lots of things have stuck. Other than one cheesey pasta dish I did as a reward, and Stevia in coffee, I am still pretty much doing it. I will eat out now and now worry about how things are prepared. OTOH, I have no desire to eat bread at all. Will I? Of course, but only if that is what I really want, and no more just out of convenience. I really think it has changed me in some ways. All for the better. I also backed into a whole new set of pants that have been hanging in the closet unused for years

I still can't get over the no legumes part of these diets
they want to be all natural, but if I can grow it in my garden, I should be able to eat it in any diet IMO
They cause inflammation in some people. The idea is to cut it all out for 30 days and then slowly introduce each food you cut out in the weeks following the diet. This will tell you how your body reacts to certain foods (dairy, legumes, sugar, etc.).

The first time I did it, the first week was tough with the energy because your body is figuring out how to utilize the new energy source. Once your body get's trained, you will be amazed by the energy you have. Also, the best advice I have for you is to eat a good breakfast. I usually do two eggs and avocado. If you are hungry after breakfast, then you'll be "chasing" it all day and it will be miserable.

That is something I am having to train myself to do. Never been a breakfast eater but ate yesterday and this morning. I was a typical small breakfast/lunch and big dinner eater. Terrible for you but trying to get out of the habit.

There is nothing wrong with skipping breakfast if you aren't hungry. If I eat breakfast I am starving 2 hours later.

I know its not bad but if I don't try and eat a decent breakfast and/or lunch, I will eat a ton for dinner. I just need to space out my eating better instead of eating most of my calories at 6pm.

Total calories is all that matters. You can eat all your calories at dinner if you want. Do what works for you.
The "eat 6 small meals a day" idea is a myth created to sell books.

I'm this way as well. I still will eat a little something sometimes at like 9:30-10:00, but honestly it tends to make me even hungrier for an early lunch.
If I skip breakfast, I can often ride that until 12:30-1:30.

Yep.Probably has something to do with insulin response. For the past few weeks I've been blending cold brew coffee with MCT oil and protein powder and I sip on that all morning.

are you working out any or just doing the diet?
what is your workday like? ie desk job, plant worker, roving sales, etc

Seems the diet has some low carb aspects to it. Electrolyte depletion is a big problem with ketogenic diets and causes fatigue and even flu-like symptoms. Make sure you are getting your electrolytes.

I will be getting back into working out. Mostly cardio stuff with some light weight, high rep lifting.
Unfortunately, desk job. My previous job, I was on my feet all day and really never had to work out much but been behind a desk for 3 years and feeling it.

What is the thought process here?

You can still eat most fruits, so it is not too bad. I think the initial weakness is from calorie deficits that my body isn't used to.

In the past, I lifted heavy weights and would rather lift light due to some shoulder and back problems. Really focusing on losing weight right now.

Gotcha. I have a really hard time losing weight when lifting despite calorie intake. I'd just focus on cardio.
