Normally it would be for me too. However, I'm going to be in Slidell visiting family so it's too tempting to pass up. Interested in the "special" releases they're supposed to unveil, but mainly looking forward to meeting some fellow bourbon addicts.

I've gotten really into bourbon over the last few years. My problem is I'm not good at describing why I like certain bourbons over others. Basically, I like it or I don't. My question is: what types of qualities does the board look for when sipping a bourbon? Smoothness is maybe the only quality I can describe to other people when giving recommendations.

Smoothness

for me that would fall under the low ethanol type like Blanton's.

I like the hard candied, cinnamon bombs.

Ones that are double oaked and you can chew the tobacco, taste the char.

One that has a ton of vanilla, bread, or caramel bomb.

also enjoying ones that are finished like ones from Good Times and Starlight

I enjoy a low proof, but I love a high proof. (110 or higher)

It really depends on my mood. Sometimes I want something that is a typical bourbon profile, vanilla, caramel, and oak. Other times I want something more complex with dark fruits, cinnamon, and smoke. Then there are some lighter profiles with butterscotch candy, tea, and licorice. Taste is really subjective though, certain scents/tastes are going to remind you of things that you've tasted or smelled in the past. If you don't have experience with licorice for example, you won't get that tasting note.

Most distilleries have a profile that is specific to them. Banana candy for Brown-Forman, grape candy for BT (this one might not be as popular but it's what I get), licorice on MGP's high rye bourbon, cinnamon on Willett.

For me some things that will grab my attention these days are Proof (I like a high proof) Age (if its stated these days) Filtering (Is it NFC non chill filtered)

I like high proof bourbons because I find them to be richer in their flavor and I can dilute as I see fit. I factor the bottle price with it...because its like orange juice concentrate lol.

Age is a thing that is going by the wayside these days. They are pumping out younger stuff to get to market quicker. Age isn't the end all be all as some young things are good in their own right and aged stuff might be crap. A good quality aged bourbon taste much better than the young, cool label, special story stuff that is flooding the market today IMO. Some things are "finished" in a different barrel like Penelope toasted. That helps mask some of the youngness.

Non chill filtered stuff to me gives it more depth, more mouth feel. It leaves more of the oils and tannins in the bourbon. More thickness viscosity altho it could all be in my head.

I like all kinds of flavor profiles, if I wanted to taste a certain way I would just buy the same bottle over and over again. Ill take something old and oaky and something sweet and creamy, doesn't matter.

Its just how I like things...give me a older bourbon straight from the barrel not filtered and not cut and let me enjoy it

Bingo, I’m a huge Rye fan, even though I’ve had a few terrible Rye’s. I am not a huge fan of the younger juice but I am with toof on enjoying some Good Times and etc, for me it is about the hunt and if I find something I don’t like I can always trade it for something I do. I enjoy high and low proof’s and have been in the game long enough to know what I like and don’t like, sample trading also helps others explore and find their like’s and dislike’s in the bourbon world. In the end there is a lot of fabricated juice out there with the younger stuff, store picks, tater labels and etc but the main staples still reign supreme IMO.

Right if we want to talk about things we don’t like, for me it’s grassy ryes (two that come to mind are Cream of Kentucky BiB and Tattersall) and young bourbons that are too grain forward (usually a result of being young).

First time having something from nbc. Enjoying them so far. The bourbon is good but that rye is better, pretty solid stuff.

They put out some solid bottles. They just won gold on a 7 year single barrel recently.

They pick some solid barrels. MGP just won gold for their 7 year barrel recently.

FIFY.

It’s funny I remember people sorta shidding on MGP back in the day because it wasn’t Kentucky bourbon. Now a metric ton of bottles are “distilled in Indiana”.
