I almost pulled the trigger on the Woodinville, but it was more than I wanted to spend after shipping. Any good?

New York Times ran a Jan. 6 article about how the demand for bourbon is fueling many counterfeits. Here are a couple of interesting parts:

quote:

Mr. Herz, who by day works as a Hollywood producer and is best known for creating the “American Pie” franchise, first grew suspicious about fake bourbon around 2016, when he started noticing that empty bottles of high-end whiskey were selling briskly online.

“What bothered me was all the empty Pappy Van Winkle bottles for sale on eBay,” he said. “I said, ‘What do you think all these people are buying the bottles for?’”

Each bottle of Pappy Van Winkle, a coveted brand that often fetches more than $5,000 on the secondary market, comes with a unique identification code. Mr. Herz was able to read the number in a photo of an empty he found on eBay.

He then went to one of the countless private bourbon fan groups on Facebook, where people buy and sell brands like Pappy. Within a few minutes, he said, he found the once-empty bottle, refilled and resealed, on sale for thousands of dollars.

I never heard of collecting Dusties:

quote:

And there is a small but passionate trade in so-called dusty whiskey, bottles that might have sat on a liquor-store shelf for decades, when bourbon was déclassé, but are now suddenly unicorns. Dusties, as they’re often known, are especially easy to fake because they usually come with screw tops, and because most consumers are unfamiliar with their packaging.

Cracked a couple of mid tier ryes this afternoon. Figured they'd make for a nice blind side by side. Very different flavor profiles but both enjoyable.

The Rossville (mgp)is a bold, straightforward rye. It's good enough to sip neat, but can't wait to try it in an old fashioned.

The high plains has more of a bourbon nose. On the palate, there's oak notes that I rarely get in ryes. There's also a little dill and some spice. It's more complex and a sipper.

Grabbed me one of these today. Very impressive. If anyone is looking for Elijah Craig BP there was around 8 bottles at a small grocery store called Don’s in Reserve.

Price is creeping up on the KC12, but it's still a great value.

Not sure what is was previously but I paid $65. It’s so good I’d pay it agin if I see it. Really enjoying it.
