Interesting downvote for EH Taylor.
I do have to ask why the condensation on the glass.

Zappa, what are your thoughts on Still Austin's Rye?
I might give it another try. It wasn't my favorite Rye though. I liked Michters better. I'm liking Rare Breed Rye too.

I have a Penelope Rye finished in Tokaji Cask...it is very nice, but that is a different price point.

Are you asking for Still Austin Rye or Rye recommendations in general? Do you enjoy Ryes?

I'll never turn down recommendations.
I was asking for opinion on Still Austin's Rye.
For me it was OK, but I plan on trying it again.

As far as Ryes that I like:
Michters, Rare Breed Rye, Sazerac, Penelope Tokaji Cask (expensive)

I love their ryes and I do not consider myself a rye person. The Saz 125 is my current all time favorite though. Had it side by side with handy and could not pick one over the other.

I don’t travel the world looking for bourbon. Mainly Lafayette and surrounding area. I saw King of Kentucky (single barrel) msrp 350 they wanted 499.00. I’m not paying that much something I never tried.

Sagamore Double Oak Rye is a great option, JD Barrel Proof Ryes are my favorite. OF BP store picks are great. The 13th Colony Rye with the maple staves is pretty damn good too. All those bottles are $60 or less. Great value and good whiskey.

Edit- OF is probably closer to $100 and my least favorite out of those options.

I like it.....its a solid rye at a good price point. But sure, there are better ryes out there.

While I would like a bottle of that, I am not good enough of a taster to justify it.

What year Handy? I had the opposite experience, but it was comparing it to the 22 Handy which is one of the better Handy’s that I’ve had.

That’s not to disparage Saz Full Proof as it’s an excellent pour for the price.

I’ve been big into ryes these last couple years and my favorite are 12+ year old barrel proof MGP 95/5 ryes. I’ve side by sided a couple of those vs the 22 Handy and it’s no competition.

ETA: for an every day pour Sagamore Double Oak gets you as close to a 12+ year MGP 95/5 profile that you’re going to get at the price (~$65).

Thanks Perm for the recommendations.
Sagamore D.O. Rye is definitely on my list.
I've not tried O.F. Ryes. I'm about to get some downvotes, but O.F. bourbon doesn't do it for me. It's OK and maybe there is a variety that is better than what I've tried, but I'm always sort of let down. I still get them on occasion but it isn't something that I have to have on the shelf at all times.

I really don't know. I was at a large tasting event, and I did not know enough about it(as I never see it otherwise) to get into that aspect of it.

What brands are usually carrying the 12 year MGP Rye?

AT

I stopped by the Tobacco Plus at the corner of N. Mall/N.Blvd and the lady at the counter told me they just got in some Eagle Rare, Blanton's, E.H. Taylor, etc. They are keeping it behind the counter.

The majority of mine have been River Roots, but Subtle Spirits, Circle City, Short Barrel, and Nashville Barrel Co have them too.

Mine have all been single barrels, so it’s really hard to say how good other barrels will be. But in general, the good ones I’ve had (I’ve had 7 different single barrels) have been at least 11.5 years old, and over 125 proof. There are some lower proof barrels, and I can’t speak to those.

There are also some 14 year old barrels out there, but I haven’t tried any of those either.

ETA: just to add, different NDPs charge different amounts for these. River Roots has always been priced well, IMO at about $120 or so. Some of these NDPs are charging $200, which don’t get me wrong the bottles I’ve had have been worth that, but it would be hard to pull the trigger at that price for a single barrel that I haven’t tried prior.

I was at Total Wine in Mandeville about an hour ago. EHT small batch, ER and Blanton’s for the taking. I picked up a bottle of Blanton’s.
No Weller though.
