I’m new to this thread. I’m looking for some expert opinions. I enjoy a good old-fashioned while having a fine cigar. What are your top 3 bourbons for making this cocktail that are under $200/bottle? Availability not an issue (I know a guy). If this has been asked before, my apologies. TIA for your replies.

well hello new bourbon baw poster
I guess prior to recommendations I'd say, and I mean this, it's completely unnecessary to make an old-fashioned with a high-end bottle.
Also, rye is a more traditional bottle.

TIA for your replies.
You can make an old fashioned with plenty of options.
-Sazerac is on ~$20-25
-Coopers Craft Barrel Reserve is only ~$35
-Rare Breed ~$60
-Wilderness Trail & Penelope have a few different variants that range from ~$45/$70

Welcome!! To quickly agree with what others have already said, I do prefer ryes when making Old Fashions and really not necessary to use high end bourbon. When I first started dabbling with making OFs I was using some of my higher priced bottles thinking the drink would be better. After making a few I quickly realized the more expensive stuff was being wasted in the drink and switched to ryes.
That being said, if you can find a bottle of Old Grandad 114, if you use it it will make your OF taste like those cinnamon flavored toothpick sticks that you probably had back in grammar school. It makes for an interesting drink! Cheers!!

Don’t spend lots on bottles for cocktails. Buffalo Trace, Old Forrester 100 proof and Evan Williams BIB for bourbons. Old Forester Rye, Bulleitt Rye and High West Double Rye are good mixing ryes. All those should come in under $40 a bottle

Good man. Always reading but not as active posting as I’ve been in the past. Couple faces on here I’d like to have a pour with (some again) one day…..one day hopefully.

Rare Breed
I made a good one with rare breed rye recently. But my go to for value is old Forester rye

Talked with Lincoln Road the other day and was told they have another barrel of this on the way.
