Can you recommend a good crowd-pleasing whiskey/bourbon/scotch in the $30-40 range just to have on hand for guests?
What's up La Flama Blanca! I would go with EH Taylor Small Batch as my "House Bourbon". You can't beat it at $40 and you can find it fairly easily. Also, just pick up a bottle of Crown or JD for the folks that like to mix with coke.

Grab a bottle of Elijah Craig or buffalo trace and grab a bottle of Bulleit Rye. Nice upgrade to your bar for ~$50.

Still savoring the last couple. Will finish them up this weekend though. I'll let you know when I see some fresh YR on the shelves. Hope you enjoyed those Hop Delusions and Double Jacks.

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.
Out of curiosity, what about scotch in the same price range (in case I decide to do 2 bottles)?

Best value single malt is Glenmorangie 10yr. But you probably want a blended scotch and i can't help there.

Me too Colonels. We want all the TD crowd to join and get involved. Y'all are good people.

Laffy bars drinkin early as usual! Smoked peach sazerac. Pretty damn good.

Is that made with the Benchmark Peach?!?!

If your interested in Scotch. Glenfiddich 15 year can be had for $50-60. A bit of a stretch for your price range given, but it is significantly better than the Glenfiddich 12.

I found a discontinued Willet 4yr Single Barrel Rye today at lunch. Only other rye from Willet I've had was the 2yr cask strength. Anyone tried this 4 yr or know why it was discontinued?

The end is near....might as well get the handle

I would start with:
--Glenfiddich Solera 15
--Lagavulin 16 (this might stretch you $70 budget by $10 or so)
--Oban 14
--Aberlour 16
They are all very different from each other but will provide a good cross section of what is available.
Glenlivet and Glenmorangie are also reasonable choices, but I don't personally enjoy them as much.

First scotch for a bourbon drinker to buy? I have tried scotch in the past, but never anything good. I believe my palate has matured now that i drink most of my bourbon neat, and am ready to buy a bottle or 2 of scotch to start with.

My first response is always Glenfiddich Solera 15 year. Being a highland scotch it has a more oaky flavor vs some of the lowland scotches which have more of a peaty flavor. That is just my fancy way of saying Glenfiddich tastes more like bourbon then most other brands so the transition is easier.
Scotch has MUCH!!!!! more differentiation in flavors than bourbon so try lots of different kinds. They will all taste significantly different from each other.

It does. People are speculating that it will be gone soon though.
