I've been trying more and more scotch lately and I've figured out my position on it. A lot of scotches are boring to me, but Islays are delicious. Love the heavily peated taste. Lagavulin 16 is a bottle I'm adding to my collection and I was thinking I need to add a Laphroaig or 2. Any suggestion for which Laphroaigs or Islays In general I should be looking for?

I will preface this with the fact that I am not a particular fan of the Islays. I did this review of a tasting I did a while back..

If Islay scotches were bridesmaids...

Laphroaig 10 (0): Is like the ugly obese toothless cousin that is asked to be a bridesmaid because she is family. In no way desirable in any way.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask (2): Is like the bridesmaid that shows up at the wedding hung over, her hair a mess, and her dress unbuttoned. She might be attractive if you cleaned her up, combed her hair, and buttoned up her dress. But in her current state, a pretty unattractive specimen.

Laphroaig 18 (6): Is like the beautiful, wild, and crazy bridesmaid that drinks a little bit too much at the wedding, dances with everyone, and ends up the night dancing on the table. You would think about taking her home but realize that although she may be great in the sack, ultimately it would be a bad decision as she is just too hot and a bit over the top.

Lagavulin 16 (7): Is like the beautiful, classy maid of honor. You would love to spend time with her. She has complexity and style but maybe a bit dull. A perfectly lovely choice.

Lagavulin Distillers Edition (8): Is like the beautiful, classy, and slightly more complex bridesmaid. You would do everything in your power to take her home, you would date her for a while, but in the end you would decide that she really isn’t the one for you. She will make some other guy very happy but she is just not your style.

These are all the Islays that I have.

Laphroaig 10 was my go to scotch before I was reborn in the Kentucky limestone streams of bourbon....Which makes sense cause I'm the guy that would jump on the grenade and take that smokin toothless beauty to the steel panther concert for a night of action...and whiskey.

Just got back from the Century Bar in Dayton, and it didn't disappoint.

FPD - Century old fashioned (best I've had to date)
SPD - OWA private barrel

I have to visit this place more often.

Try any of these at a bar before you commit to a bottle.

I can't disagree more with the bridesmaid analogy. Not only is it nonsensical, but it dismisses a classic malt as a "0", which is a rating I would reserve only for rat poison or whisky finished in nuclear waste barrels.

The Laph 10 is a perfect example of what a good peated whisky can be, although it can be a bit jarring for unaccustomed palates. The currently available Laph 15 released for the 200th anniversary is a tad more subdued, and reduces the peat and phenolic notes for a little more fruitiness and oakiness. The 200th anniversary Cairdeas is also floating around and is a step up still.

I think the Lagavulin 16 is incredibly well rounded, easy to drink and consistent. They actually are introducing an 8 year old Laga next month that should be interesting. I haven't tried it.

Ardbeg 10 is another standard, but I would be remiss not to suggest the Uigeadail, which is cask strength at least partially matured in sherry casks. Probably my favorite I've mentioned so far.

Also easily available is Caol Ila, which tones down the peatiness a bit. However, I don't think it does Islay as well as Laph/Laga/Ardbeg.

For something completely different, pick up a Bunnahabhain 12 year or a Bruichladdich Laddie. The Bunna is very lightly peated, and the Bruichladdich is unpeated, and either would be a fine way to explore an Islay malt without doing the peat thing at full bore.

Wow... I look forward to your third post. I am sorry you found my bridesmaid analogy difficult to understand. Maybe I will use smaller words or less of them next time.

I am sure you are correct. I have only tried about 100 scotches and double that in bourbons so my palate for whiskey is pretty unaccustomed and unrefined. Maybe if you were to graduate from the 10s and 12s to something with a bit more age and refinement on it you might change your ideas of what a good sms can be.

Laph 10 is hideous. It is simply put the worst single malt scotch I have ever tried but again I have only tried about 100 of them. Other than LA1 bourbon which is equally hideous it is the worst whiskey I have ever tried. If I were able to give it a negative score and a more disapproving review I would have. Maybe calling it a toothless troll bridesmaid with warts. It is so bad it will turn people off from drinking whiskey all together.

Lag 16 is a perfectly fine whiskey. I found it to be a bit dull in comparison to the Lag Distillers Edition.

I don't even collect any sms under 10 so I will probably not be in the market for Lag 8. I am actually pretty disappointed in Lag for even introducing an 8.

I have stated several times that I am not a fan of Islay so I don't spend much of my money collecting it, but feel I am a pretty fine judge of good whiskey.

Welcome to the board.
