Just starting to get into Whiskey, so I’m a Newb.

I’ve only really sipped some of the basics, Crown, Makers & Jameson (I have several bottles bc of gifts due to Jameson being my name, so that’s pretty sweet). Anyway...

Any suggestions for me to try? I’ve been told that higher end whiskeys are really smooth and would like to see for myself!

I like over ice and let it melt just slightly to cut the bite a tad. Looking forward to some Recs!!

Do yourself a favor and pick up a bottle of four roses single barrel. Should be widely available, it's a great bourbon, and it should be $38ish.

Figure out a way to try these. It will give you a good diverse tasting. All of these should be available at any good whiskey bar.

Pikesville rye or Bulleit Rye
4 Roses Single Barrel
Michter's American Whiskey
Glenfiddich 15 yo.
Lagavulin 16yo

I would honestly stay away from the high end whiskeys until you establish a taste. You won't enjoy them enough. Unless you have tons of money then go for it.

Don't let anyone tell you how you like to drink your whiskey. If you like it on the rocks, drink it on the rocks. Just be mindful that you will get taunted by most whiskey snobs. I personally like mine over a single ice cube.

Good Luck.

Had Blantons for the first time last night, and that one is by far my favorite as of now. I'm also a newb. I've started picking up bottles here and there since the holidays began.

Eagle Rare 10 yr
4 Roses Single Barrel
Elijah Craig
Knob Creek reserve (120 proof)

These are what I have so far. 4R is the best of mine so far.

Looking like 4Roses should be my first bottle!

I’ll check back in after I snag some!

Welcome

An old saying “ all bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon” would be wise to learn the difference, fwiw.....

Just start trying stuff. expect to spend $50-$500 a bottle. Right now most of the good stuff is gone from the holidays.

A group of 5-6 lifelong friends are making a trip to Louisville this spring, we are probably hitting the distilleries one day. Are any of the distilleries better than others for tasting or is it run of the mill juice? Anyone have a contact for a private tour with better acces? If anyone has good bars and restaurants to hit in Louisville, I will take those suggestions also.

The distillery tours I have been on are pretty much all basic juice tasting at the end. Buffalo Trace ( the best tour), is like ER10, BT, White Dog, Bourbon Cream for the tasting. 4 Roses is Yellow label, Small Batch and SB for the tasting. If it were me I would do the Regular Buffalo Trace Tour early in the day. Then book the Hard Hat tour through their website as soon as I could the same day. I would do 4 Roses immediately after. It can be done you will have to stay on task. I would do Makers Mark one day, then on the same day do either Jim Beam or Heaven HIll. Probably Jim Beam actually, cause you will get a voucher from the 4 Roses tour to go to their warehouses which are about 5 miles down the road from Jim Beam. The Wild Turkey gift shop is something to see (great views), never did the tour but you could stop on the way to 4 Roses from BT.

Buffalo trace hard hat tour is one you want to book in advance and take advantage of... it’s probably the best tour around.

4 roses for the gift shop bottles (prepare your wallet)

Jim beam was a little more “high tech” but really good.

Makers mark was awesome and had beautiful grounds.

Skip Heaven Hill & wild turkey imo.... it sucked

Willett is small but pretty cool and has some great gift shop bottles at times
