abita was first opened by german immigrants who hated american beers so they brewed their common german beer recipe beers simply to drink their beer.

You're correct. I would sit here all day and talk this shite. All of their original beers, except turbo dog are lagers. Traditional German. Purple haze is from an old German recipe. A wheat lager if you will. The original owners of abita bought my parents house back in the day.

You want a link to their original ownership origins?

You do know the original brewmaster left and started Covington brewery/heinerbrau right? Or do I need to link that as well? He's since sold out but his name was heinerschneit or some nazi shite like that.

If you can provide one, sure. I'd never heard that before so I'd like to find out more about it.

It's not on their Wikipedia page so yeah, rush and Jim were. Money men while heinerschneit or whatever was the man behind abita. He apparently had a huge feud with David blossman. Probably about corrupt banking practices if I had to guess. You from the north shore?

Got ya. I know more about the business and history of breweries than I do beer. What a lot of people don't realize is that abita is in for a lot of trouble. They're continuously losing share and sales in their home market because of other beers coming into the state and newer breweries opening. While they're the king of la, how much longer will they be? Someone said by the end of next year(2015) there will be 25 Louisiana breweries. Someone has to give up market share for these new products?with the exception of turbo dog and ph and Andygator. Their beers do not sell outside I of la. With the exception of heavy transplant areas like Houston. I don't have links for all this but you'll just have to trust me, watch what happens over the next 5 years.

Wouldn't shock me. Their line-up outside of the selects is uninspired. Increased competition breeds excellence. They'll have to step up or be in bad shape. Looks like they are trying to fire back. They'll still take a hit, but they can remain prominent.

The reason I said its embarrassing is because we Have some of the best food in the world, why can't we have world class breweries. No one to my knowledge or opinion is on track for that besides maybe parish. Their (abita) beers outside of this state are rated poorly. We need/deserve Asheville style breweries and brewery scene. Unfortunately, when people think la, all they know is abita and for everyone else in the country, it's a subpar brewery. I'm done. Sorry for being a Debbie downer.

Andygator
Amber
Jockamo

Although I can't handle maybe more than 2 Andygator's. Those things will have you
soaring quickly.

I'm not crazy about the fruity ones like with strawberry or raspberries.

I realize you are in the know b/c the orginal owners bought your folks house, BUT you do know Abita is in the process of a 12 million dollar expansion. I want to say they are already one of the top 20 craft breweries in the country before this expansion. In 2012 their production grew by 20%.

pretty sad that opening a brewery is 10x harder than actually making a world class beer

I don't know about the "making a world class" part, but of course running a business is going to be harder than brewing. Brewing is just a hobby to most people out there.

I mean, lots of people can cook too, but would have no idea how to run a restaurant

S.O.S. is pretty good.

Purple Haze freezing cold in a can, also.
