there's just nothing there that is unique at all to eat at ... you can eat at the same places or types of places in BR .. why eat at the same kinds of places you can eat at at home on vacation ? i can see if you have a lot of unique restaurants that you won't find at home .. then knock yourself out ...

If you happen to be in the mood for eye-talian, Cafe' Grazie is a good little spot. Very good lasagna and reasonable prices.

DOn't go to Lulu's unless you are in the market for kitschy Buffett crap. The food is horrible. HORRIBLE!
Gulf Shores/OB is a product of their market. People on vacation that have spent the majority of their day half drunk want fried seafood. That's what the restaurants supply. There are quality fine dining options, but you are going to have to drive a bit. Most of the time when I'm visiting my second home I'm happy with a dozen oysters, a cold beer, and a spider burger.
If I want to really eat I'll head to Cobalt and get their sword fish or their paella and watch the boats go under the bridge. Or the Sunset Cork Room in Gulf Shores. I've heard good things about the Villagio at the Wharf.
I like driving over to Fairhope to Gambino's for Italian. Just an old mob run restaurant. The name is no coincidence.
My Dad likes the Wolf Bay Lodge in Foley. It's fried fare, but that's what he likes.

The very reason I did not go to louisiana lagniappe there. Although, the probably had the best food.

"The Grape Escape" is very good!!! It is in OB, next to Winn Dixie and Al's five and dime. Simple sandwich/soup/salad shop. The owners are from New Orleans. We had the French dip and Tuscan pinini. Everything was fresh, seasoned well.

Lots of folks don't want to cook on vacation. I'm the opposite. If in GS/OB area, I go to Blalock's every day for fresh seafood and cook every night except for maybe one when we might order out.
I also like hanging out on the beach or the balcony in the evenings and have no desire to go to restaurants every night. It's not for everyone, though.

I'd much rather cook than go to the restaurants there. I know i'm no master chef but, I like my food more than i do theirs.

You don't need to be a master chef to prepare fresh seafood. Simple is sometimes the best way, anyway. A good piece of fresh fish is tasty broiled, grilled or pan sauteed and there's nothing difficult about any of those preparations. Plus, you can buy steamed shrimp or eat jumbo lump crabmeat or crab claws right out of the container. No cooking required and you don't have to drink and drive.

why people spend their money in those fry barns instead of just cooking is beyond me ..
I always knew you and Mikedatigah seemed eerily similar.

A 2 page thread on Gulf Shores or B'ham food and no inflammatory post from andouille? That has to be a F&D board record.
Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is pretty sparse for good restaurants. Cafe Grazie, Cobalt, Cosmos, Villagio's, and Mangos are all pretty good. I like Franco's Italian for casual Italian.

We decided to eat at Cosmo's tonight. I must say I am really glad we made the little trip to Orange Beach. The food was awesome. The setup and ambiance was really cool too. They had a little 3 man jazz band on the deck. Once again my brother in law and I set ourselves up to view all the eye candy that passed by and we weren't disappointed.
We got 3 seafood platters, sushi, 14 oz ribeye, seared tuna salad and their famous crab claws with that sauce that you dip your bread in. Everything was great and the service was very above average. Since we are cheap asses we also took advantage of the $1 highlife lights that they had to offer. It sure beats the $3+ tax for domestic beers.
There are a couple of other spots that we want to try next summer but I am glad we tried out Cosmo's. Thanks to everyone for the responses!
Back to the real world tommorrow.

Floarabama for Royal Reds, my favorite place to go.
On the Florida Alabama line. Buy a tshirt while you are there.

I second this suggestion. A little expensive, a little out of the way, but well worth it.

Meh, I'm half and half on the idea of cooking. On one hand, I am the one who cooks at home and we eat at the house 6 nights a week. On vacation at a condo, I'm happy to have breakfast and lunch in the condo, but on some of the dinners I want to eat out. Makes for more quality time with family and no "work" is involved.
I set my expectations low at restaurants in the gulf shores area and just know I'm going out with the kids and wife for quality time. Having a place with a decent view like Tacky Jacks and such adds to the experience. I can get good food any day in N.O, so I know that is not what I'm going out looking for down there.
My one rule is that I'm not waiting more than 30 minutes for a table. No sense in wasting hours of my vacation waiting in line to eat average food. Just try to go early and than way we can finish up and get back to the pool/beach while everyone else is off eating.
