I've never been there, but a post popped up Todd Price's Where Nola Eats group Facebook page that all the employees walked out yesterday when a manager was made to leave. One of the other employees wrote a post about it, but it doesn't really give details. The link to her post is below. She wrote letter to her regulars as well.

Here's the post.

quote:

Yesterday LaShaun Crawford, the GM of Pulp & Grind, was forced to leave, the entire staff walked out in solidarity. The staff will not be returning. Our lovely sanctuary corner in the CBD will no longer be. When I first moved to NOLA I was in a dark depression and was suffering daily suicidal thoughts, LaShaun Crawford and the community and Pulp and Grind brought me up. Made me feel seen, gave me worth, love, and confidence. LaShaun helped me realize how love and compassion can be such a powerful tool, how positively effecting one person’s day has a ripple effect. Thank you all for being a part of the P&G family over the past 3 years, for loving, trusting, supporting, and enjoying life with us on the daily. We were living the dream!! Here is my letter to my regulars about why we had to leave. This is not our Pulp and Grind anymore. LaShaun WAS PULP AND GRIND, without her its just another coffee shop in Downtown NOLA.

Here's a link to her letter.

quote:

Yesterday, the bakers, juicer, and baristas walked out of Pulp and Grind after witnessing Peter and Cassi Dymond escorting LaShaun Crawford out of her shop. I say her shop not because of a name on a lease or business license but because, over the past three years, I have stood beside LaShaun and witnessed her create a community and thriving business at Pulp and Grind. She is the soul and driving force of the shop. The employees work at Pulp and Grind because we love it: We love coming to work and being in the environment that LaShaun Crawford has created, in a shop that is driven by her values and mission, with her at the helm welcoming all into the P&G family. Without her, it is not our Pulp and Grind. LaShaun, from day one, established a place for the community, a safe space, an inspiring space, a place to nourish the body, mind, and spirit. A huge part of employee training is LaShaun teaching the Pulp and Grind way: creating and serving community, all peoples, no matter who walks in the shop is met with love. People come into our coffee shop not just for a transaction but because they need a positive change in their day: a boost, a break, a refresh, a place to heal; that is what we serve at P&G, under LaShaun. As LaShaun Crawford leaves, this sense of welcoming will go with it. The magic that was Pulp and Grind ends abruptly and it’s sad. Yesterday LaShaun was not reasoned with or asked to transition into a different position, she was screamed at and had the cops called on her. The abuses I have seen LaShaun suffer over the past year will not allow me to work at P&G any longer nor will I patronize Satsuma or any other ventures of the parent company. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of the past three years at Pulp and Grind. You all gave me a community when I needed it most. I hope to see you all at festivals, parades, and the grocery store. Please friend me on Facebook: Megan Eileen Kosmoski, I want to know about your vacations and lives and how you feel about the weather! Ha! I will miss starting my day with you all. With love and gratitude, Megan Kosmoski

What she did will determine which side I am on.

If she went against the owners wishes then yeah she should be fired. If the staff wants to walk out with her that is fine by me, just won't get my sympathy. I would say they will probably regret the decision, but in all honesty it is service job that probably doesn't change a lot.

Just noticed the reason for her firing and being escorted out by the police is noticeable absent. Also no one on the FB post asked what actually happened.

The woman fired has apparently worked for the owners for some time. She was at their Satsuma place before P&G. The website still has her name on it.

quote:

Pulp & Grind is the latest concept from Peter and Cassi Dymond, owners of Satsuma Cafe. As the name states, this shop will solely focus on juice and coffee while maintaining the high standard of quality and customer service that Satsuma is so well known for. Pulp&Grind will feature organic, cold-pressed juices as well as craft coffee served by well-trained baristas. LaShaun Crawford, former manager at Satsuma Maple, will head up the shop as general manager and main contact.

Definitely makes you wonder. It's unusual for employees to walk out like that. It certainly made me curious. I'd like to know the story, but I don't know if we ever will.

ETA: I was hoping someone here might know something.

Woof

And since none of the SJW employees will say why she was escorted from the building makes me believe it was warranted.

Employees not even a job

Tempest in a teapot (coffeepot?)
Successful owners don't generally fire productive managers in a public fashion without cause. Even if the cause was spurious and trumped up, wouldn't you want to keep working at the place to be the kind of friendly, hospitable employee she trained you to be?

Mass walkout sounds like a high schooler's response to a change in management. At the very least, wouldn't you want to give notice that you're leaving due to the change in management? Your own conduct and choices reflect on you....to walk out in the middle of a shift is crap.

It would be better for the resume to at least give reasonable notice rather than walking out. Mass walkout (though it doesn't sound like many employees) is unusual especially in this type of business. You'd think that at least someone couldn't afford to do that. Another reason it's curious.

They are barristas working at Pulp and Grind, I'd say their life is probably led by their heart and not mind.

Interesting. Wonder what went down. Crazy they were able to get the entire staff on board.

An old job of mine got rid of the GM we all loved and replaced him with someone horrible. A total of ~12 of us left in the span of a month, but nobody left on the spot like that. Not that I'm against it. Just that none of us could afford it.

Yeah, apparently it had been an issue and it wasn't resolving like the owners expected.

A few other posts seem to reflect that it was ongoing for a while.

If it was a misunderstanding then no doubt she will land on her feet.

Apparently she got ahold of the company mailer list and sent out a letter to everyone on it lamenting what happened.

Sounds like a case of defamation if she is worth anything.

When I read that, it sounds like she wasn't trained enough for Quickbooks, made some errors and the owners thought she was stealing.

Do you have a link to those posts?

It was on that chicks FB page. I don't know how faceyspace works or I would link it.

May have been honest mistakes, but if it was recurring and costing the owners money it is ineptitude and has to be removed.

When biking this week a group of high schooler’s were eyeing me at a stop light. One of them yells out “You see that girl? That girl has a boyfriend AND a girlfriend!” I’m overjoyed that my bisexuality radiates to those around me AND that I seem emotionally mature enough to balance polyamorous relationships!
