What possesses people to make tomato based gumbo?

My band played at a "Cajun" restaurant tonight in SW FL. We get meals comped so I got Boudin balls and gumbo. Boudin balls were pretty good. The gumbo description mentioned okra and I was hesitant for a second because of previous experiences outside of La, but then thought "probably roux based with okra...no biggie". It was basically V8 tomato juice with a TON of Crystal hot sauce, onions, celery, okra, chicken, and the only saving grace...andouille from Lafayette. I honestly don't even remember there being bell pepper. They were real proud, "The owner is from Houma and this is her mom's recipe". I wanted to tell them, "Well her mama don't know how to make gumbo".

Some people like it. To each their own. I have never used tomato’s. But people outside La don’t know what the hell they are doing and the people eating it don’t know any better.

I completely agree. I'm not a fan of tomatoes in gumbo, but I'll eat it if it's in a good roux-based gumbo. This one had no roux. Like I said it was like tomato juice with diced tomatoes in it.

That's not even gumbo.

If they were proud of it though I would have just eaten it and said it was very good

Gumbo is the culmination of many different cultures coming together in Louisiana. There's no clear origin due to there being so many similar versions of it. Many of these variations were due to the ingredients available based on location and wealth. To say there is one right way to make gumbo goes against the very definition of it.
I don't put tomatoes in my gumbo but I've had gumbos that made me want to try. When done right, it can taste great. There are plenty of gumbos that taste like shite. I guarantee it's not the tomatoes that ruin them.

It was decent for soup. Take the andouille out and nothing about the dish said gumbo.
I just don't understand why I haven't found any good Cajun or Creole food outside of Louisiana.

I'm getting a lot of hate here, but the way I grew up is if it don't have a roux it ain't Louisiana gumbo.
You can call it whatever you want.
