Lots of good information in here, including the fact that the original thickener was okra (with tomatoes), then file (for when okra was out of season), and finally roux as used by the French.

My mom likes to put rotel in her gumbo for a little kick. It tastes pretty good, but I don’t put it in mine.

Its not that bad... Just makes it more like a soup than gumbo

Yea, that does not sound like gumbo. My wife uses okra cooked down with tomatoes in her gumbo, but you can't even tell it has any tomato in it when it is finished.
