As others have said, "dark beer" is a very broad category/term, but I will go with Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout.

To me it's a beer that is almost black in color and nearly opaque.
Agreed - stout/IS, porter, black lager...
Sweetwater Dank Tank Mean Joe Bean, TenFidy, Avery makes some high quality stouts/porters, Great Divide Yeti series, Left Hand, I could go on for days.

FTMFW! Love this Scot beer. They make a Porter that is awesome too.

A lot of people say dark as a synonym for heavy.
There are some "dark" beers that don't taste dark at all. Nut Brown Ale and Guinness are light. No Ale should be classified as a dark beer and Guinness is an atypical light and refreshing stout.

I can't think of a better "dark" beer than Old Rasputin.
