It’s honestly the Louisiana culinary equivalent of the “McRib” at McDonalds. Seasonal/limited time causes people to elevate iit’s quality/taste in their minds over reality.

Don't forget the donut variety that's nothing but a big donut

At it's heart, it's brioche ... which is basically a bread with egg and loads of butter - and sometimes sugar. Fresh brioche can be amazing. And like any food, if it's made poorly, it'll taste poorly, and if it's old it'll be stale.

It's funny that over the years people have turned king cakes into just a big cinnamon roll and now people complain that it's nothing but a big cinnamon roll. While I like good, fresh cinnamon rolls too, their dough doesn't contain eggs, if I'm not mistaken.

But these days, people equate king cakes with stale sysco cinnamon rolls.

Yeah, to each their own but I couldn't agree more.

The best -- like most baked things -- is all about the labor and expertise in getting the actual pasty dough to bake perfectly.

It's a lot cheaper and easier to skimp on that step and just pile on extra ingredients to cover up the original sin.

The king cake my grandmother made had a little dash of cinnamon but was mainly just perfectly baked moist and "layery" brioche with powdered sugar fluffed on it.

I never understood it either. If it’s so good why not sell it all year long?

Im glad with all the Catholic bashing that goes on in here that all of you can enjoy our holiday with us. There is nothing like food and family.

Maps says it's temporarily closed. Don't know why. Have not gone that way lately.

Call Angelo's Bakery in Metairie. Thought I saw they do canolli flavor.

Plain/traditional king cakes are the most overrated dessert on the planet.

A couple of comments. First, a dessert is a serving after a meal. King Cake can be a dessert but it also can be a snack or a meal King Cake cannot be pigeon holed. Second, traditional non-filled are the BEST King Cakes and deserve to be revered!

I spoke to the lady running Randazzo's in Chalmette a few years ago about King Cakes and she told me if you wanted one at other times of the year, they'd make it for you special, but they do not bake them daily after Mardi Gras season.

The gap between the best and worst is razor thin. It’s bread and icing.

Never got the hype for king cakes. Would rather waste my calories on a lot of other things that I actually enjoy and make me fat.
