Fire up your grill so the grill is nice and hot, cut an onion in half and use a grill fork or something similar to rub the cut half of the onion all over the grill similar to how you would use a wire brush, works an absolute treat!
This seems like a brilliant idea

I need to find a better solution.
I've got a nylon bristle one from Home Depot that works fine.

I lean them against the smoker base and let the dogs gnaw the burnt pieces off, then put them back over a hot fire.

I have one of those too, its OK but not great. Gas grills are easy - leave all the smoot on there each time you're done cooking. Next time you cook, set the grill on highest heat for ~10 mins then bang/scrape the ash off the grate with the paddle or a wooden spatula. Set the cooking temp, wipe with a damp paper towel, then an oiled paper towel.
For kettles, kamados, stick burners, and electric things - a pressure washer is your friend. Or wash 'em the coonass way with a hose and a scotch bright pad in the grass.
Please don't put a dirty greasy grill in your oven on clean cycle. Your local fire department thanks you.

High heat followed by a deck brush with yellow bristles

Always use a wet paper towel afterwards.

Hose down with oven cleaner, put in a black trash bag and let it sit in the sun for a day then hose off.

I picked up this one after we found a wire on some food. It's not as efficient, but it definitely does a good enough job.

Just found a wire in my dog's stomach on an Xray. No telling how long its been there since I haven't used a wire brush in years.

I started using this
Admittedly, I usually never clean them at all. With stainless that is about a 5 year replacement if you frick up and leave the grill out in the rain so not a huge cost if you have a weber kettle like me.

I've been using something similar to this, just to scrape off what the dogs don't get.

My family stopped using wire brushes after a family member got a bristle lodged in their throat. A quick use of the google machine says it's not that uncommon, the bristles can break off and stick to the grate, ultimately being transferred to the food. I dunno how common it is, but now they use aluminum foil.
I do a quick visual inspection of the grates after cleaning.. not sure how you'd miss a wire bristle stuck to a grate.
I will be more thorough in my inspection from now on though.
Or I may pick up one of the wooden paddle scrapers.

I typically just let most of it burn off, then knock off the gradeau with the spiral brush

Heat up my grill
ball of aluminum foil.
If I want my grill really clean, I used wet paper towels after the foil
